New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson becomes a free agent this summer.
The Charlotte Hornets are interested in New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson, according to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line.
Robinson becomes an unrestricted free agent this offseason. As of this writing, the Knicks are up 2-0 against the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals.
He's a terrible free-throw shooter, but Robinson is one of the best centers in the NBA. He's an elite lob threat, rebounder and shot-blocker.
For the Knicks this season, Robinson averaged 5.7 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game while shooting 72.3% from the field. He's been in the NBA since 2018 and holds career averages of 7.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per contest.
The Hornets missed the playoffs by one game this season. They have a bright future with LaMelo Ball, Brandon Miller and Kon Knueppel leading the way, but they need a veteran in their starting lineup who has been to the playoffs and knows what it takes to win and Robinson fits that bill.
The Hornets could start Ball, Knueppel, Miller, Miles Bridges and Robinson next season and bring Moussa Diabaté off the bench. Robinson would be the perfect center to pair with Ball. He excels in all of the areas where a rim-runner should.
According to Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report, the Hornets have the trade resources to acquire a star forward or center this offseason. Charlotte wouldn't have to trade for Mitchell since he's a free agent.
"If the Charlotte Hornets want to make a play for a star forward or center to complement the high-scoring trio of LaMelo Ball, Brandon Miller and Kon Knueppel, they've got the resources," Hughes wrote. "We're not weighing the value of expiring salaries here, but just as an illustration of Charlotte's position, consider this idea: Conservatively, it could attach Nos. 14 and 18 in the 2026 draft to $50 million in expiring salary (Miles Bridges, Josh Green and Grant Williams all come off the books after 2026-27) and draw the attention of any rebuilder looking to move a big name."
