Miller scored 34, a career-high 39, and 31 in three straight games before Friday's 19, and Charles Lee says his teammates want the ball in his hands.
Brandon Miller went 15-of-28 from the field Monday night at Spectrum Center and scored 39 points, a career high, as the Charlotte Hornets beat the Washington Wizards 110-103.
That was the middle game of three straight above 30. He had 34 against the Miami Heat two nights earlier, then 31 points and 12 rebounds Wednesday in a loss at Detroit.
Friday brought him back to 19 in a 95-79 loss at Washington.
Through six games, Miller is averaging 25.6 points on 39.0% shooting. His shot was off in the first two, a win at Brooklyn and a 128-81 home loss to the Atlanta Hawks.
Charlotte shot 33.3% in the first quarter Monday, went 1-for-11 from 3, and trailed 21-19. Miller scored 27 points across the second and third quarters.
He made 5 of his 10 3-pointers and added 3 steals and 2 blocks, one of them a chase-down. One of those 3s made him the second-fastest player in NBA history, by games played, to 500 career 3-pointers.
Washington cut a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit to 103-100 with 1:13 left. Miller hit a jumper, then made a free throw for a 106-100 lead with 38.3 seconds to go.
His previous career high was 38, against Detroit on Nov. 21, 2024. Monday was the 14th 30-point game of his career and the fourth time he had scored 30 in back-to-back games, and it gave Charlotte its first consecutive wins of the season.
Anthony Davis had 29 points and 10 rebounds for Washington, Trae Young added 22 points and 10 assists, and Kyshawn George scored 20. The Wizards had been trying for their first 3-1 start since the 2022-23 season.
Before tip-off, Miller bought 500 tickets for breast cancer survivors to attend the game.
"I was really going to do more, a lot more than that," Miller said.
With LaMelo Ball traded to Minnesota and Miles Bridges in Phoenix, Miller is now the longest-tenured player on Charlotte's roster.
"They're like, 'You are that guy, we believe in you,'" Hornets coach Charles Lee said. "'So when we put the ball in your hand, go make a play. For yourself, for your teammates.' Not only is Brandon prepared for it, but his teammates want to see him in those moments and they encourage him in those moments, which is really helping as well."
Miller, a 2023 first-round pick out of Alabama, is in his fourth season. He agreed this month to a five-year, $209 million extension.
"It makes you smile every day, just to see other NBA guys put all their trust in me," Miller explained.
The Hornets have not had Kon Knueppel (hamstring), Coby White (calf), or Grant Williams (hamstring) for any of their six games. Against Washington on Monday, Grayson Allen scored 15 and Moussa Diabate had 11 points and 17 rebounds, and Charlotte grabbed 20 offensive rebounds.
At 3-3, Charlotte hosts the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday at 6 p.m. ET. Detroit visits Spectrum Center on Monday.
