A blistering 47-point first quarter vanished as Luka Doncic exploded for a 52-point night, fueling a massive Lakers rally that silenced the Delta Center crowd.
The Utah Jazz got off to an incredible start against the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday, but ultimately couldn’t maintain that momentum in a 132-123 loss at home. Utah scored 47 points in the opening quarter and built an 18-point lead, but the Lakers responded in a big way to take control of the contest. It was a disappointing result for a Jazz team that had an opportunity to earn its second consecutive victory against one of the better teams in the Western Conference.
Utah came out firing offensively, putting together one of the most impressive quarters of the young season. The Jazz were moving the ball, generating quality looks and finding ways to score both inside and from beyond the arc. Ace Bailey provided an early spark, while Lauri Markkanen and the rest of Utah’s supporting cast helped build a comfortable advantage. By the end of the first quarter, the Jazz had scored 47 points and appeared to be in complete control of the game.
However, things changed dramatically in the second quarter. Los Angeles outscored Utah 45-24 in the period, completely erasing the deficit and taking a 74-71 lead into halftime. Luka Doncic was nearly impossible to contain throughout the contest, finishing with 52 points, eight rebounds and 10 assists. The Jazz simply didn’t have an answer for him defensively, and the Lakers were able to capitalize on that throughout the night. What initially looked like a potential statement victory for Utah quickly became an uphill battle.
The second half was much more competitive, as Utah continued to fight and keep the game within reach. Both teams scored 29 points in the third quarter, leaving the Jazz trailing by just three entering the final period. However, Los Angeles was able to execute down the stretch, with Austin Reaves providing a significant offensive boost alongside Doncic. Reaves finished with 29 points and knocked down a crucial three-pointer in the closing minute to help seal the victory. The Lakers ultimately outscored Utah 29-23 in the fourth quarter, putting the finishing touches on their comeback win.
For the Jazz, this was a frustrating loss considering how well they started the game. There were plenty of positives offensively, especially in the opening quarter, but allowing 132 points made it difficult to come away with a victory. Utah has now dropped to 1-2 on the season after splitting its first two games against Memphis and New Orleans. The Jazz won’t have much time to dwell on this result, as they’ll return to the floor Monday night against the Memphis Grizzlies at home. It’ll be another opportunity for Utah to build consistency and bounce back from a disappointing loss.
