From NFL-inspired film sessions to a physical defensive mindset, Utah’s rookie reveals how a Mamba mentality and playoff ambitions are fueling his transition to the professional stage.

Utah Jazz rookie Darryn Peterson made his national TV debut on NBA Today, joining Malika Andrews to discuss his Summer League approach, his expectations for the Jazz and the unusual film session that introduced him to Hall of Fame safety Ed Reed. The interview offered the most in-depth look yet at Peterson’s mentality heading into his first NBA season.

Peterson said his decision to play extended minutes in Las Vegas was simple.

“I haven't played a game since March,” he told Andrews. “So to be able to go out there and compete with these guys was something I wanted to do, and I had a ton of fun doing it.”

He added that feeling fully healthy again has restored his joy on the court.

“I'm feeling healthy, and I'm feeling like I'm back to being 100%, so that makes it fun for me when I can go out there and give it my 100% every time.”

His Summer League usage has sparked conversation about his long‑term role, but when asked if he sees himself as Utah’s point guard of the future, Peterson said, “I think more combo. Me and Keontae can both play on or off it, so either or.” He also detailed the guidance he’s received from Keontae George, who has been around the Summer League group throughout the week. “He's telling me it's a long season, so get these games in and get as much game reps as you can now, because I'm going to be thrown into that fire when the season comes.”

Peterson said the Jazz’s push toward playoff contention is already an open conversation within the locker room.

“It's definitely something we talk about a lot and definitely a goal of ours,” he said. “I'm going to try everything I can to help be part of that.”

One of the interview’s standout moments came when Peterson described the film session Will Hardy surprised him with after his Summer League debut.

“We watched some film with Ed Reed,” Peterson said. “It was just a player he said he wanted me to be like on defense… I didn't know who he was actually; I'm a Bengals fan.”

The session lasted “a good 10 minutes,” and Peterson said Reed’s anticipation and playmaking left a strong impression.

Peterson also referenced Kobe Bryant when discussing his Summer League mindset.

“My goal every time was to go out there and get better,” he said. “That's something Kobe was; he wanted to get better every day.”

As for the upcoming season, Peterson kept it simple…“Right now, all of them,” he said when asked which games he’s circled. “I'm just looking forward to playing everybody.”

And when asked about his physical defensive tone in Summer League, he doubled down. “They told us we get 10 fouls, so I shouldn't let anybody get any layups or any easy buckets. If I get 10, like I said, I'm going out with nine.”

With the season drawing ever closer, Utah fans will be excited to see Peterson’s mindset play out on the court in a true NBA setting.
