After leading the Stars to G League silverware, the prolific Ole Miss shooter earns a second chance to translate his defensive tenacity and scoring punch into a roster spot.
Matt Murrell's first professional season brought a trophy to Salt Lake City.
He helped make sure of it.
Murrell came off the bench for 17 points in the 2025 G League Winter Showcase championship game, helping the Salt Lake City Stars beat Raptors 905 and giving his first professional season an early milestone.
Eight months later, the organization is giving him something else.
An NBA opportunity:
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Murrell appeared in 44 games for the Stars last season, including 20 starts, and scored in double figures 23 times.
This also isn't Murrell's first opportunity with Utah.
The Jazz signed him to an Exhibit 10 contract last September before waiving him ahead of the regular season. Murrell stayed in Utah's developmental pipeline and joined the Stars, beginning the longer route toward another NBA opportunity.
He made the most of it.
Across 44 total appearances for the Stars, Murrell averaged 10.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.3 steals per game.
His path to Salt Lake City began after a lengthy college career at Ole Miss.
Murrell spent five seasons with the Rebels from 2020-25 and left as one of the most productive players in program history. He appeared in a school-record 153 games while finishing fourth in Ole Miss history with 261 made 3-pointers and seventh with 1,788 points.
His best individual season came in 2023-24.
Murrell averaged 16.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.6 steals across 32 starts, earning second-team All-SEC honors.
That season also produced one of the strangest stat lines of his college career.
Murrell scored 18 points against Troy on Dec. 19, 2023.
He also stole the ball 10 times.
The performance set an Ole Miss single-game record, tied the SEC record and gave Murrell the first points-steals double-double in program history.
Now he'll get another chance to turn his time with the Stars into something more.
The Jazz did not disclose the terms or structure of Murrell's new contract, leaving his exact path toward Utah's regular-season roster unclear.
That should become more apparent as training camp approaches.
Murrell already knows the other side of that competition. Utah gave him an opportunity last fall before he landed with the Stars and spent a season making his case inside the organization's developmental system.
A year later, the Jazz are bringing him back for another look.
Murrell helped the Stars bring home a trophy along the way.
Now he'll try to stick around with the team above them.
