A daunting West Group A draw tests Utah’s revamped roster early, as high-stakes Friday matchups against elite rivals offer a critical barometer for the Jazz’s postseason potential.

The Utah Jazz's 2026-27 season has built-in incentives with the NBA Cup, and it arrives each Friday of November.

The NBA Cup draw put Utah in West Group A with the Denver Nuggets, Houston Rockets, Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks. They play four games against Western Conference opponents in four weeks. Every one of them counts toward advancing to the next stage.

The Cup is built into the regular-season schedule, with each team playing the other four teams in its group once.

Utah plays at Dallas on Nov. 6 and at Houston on Nov. 13. The Jazz return to Delta Center for two home games, first on Nov. 20 to host Phoenix and then Denver on Nov. 27. Two road games to open group play leave the Jazz little margin for error if they want to make it to the next round.

A pair of losses on the road puts extra pressure to win both games at home.

The stakes are there even if the trophy isn't a priority. A group winner automatically advances to the knockout round, and one wild card per conference gets a bid as well.

Tiebreakers can turn on point differential, so how Utah wins and loses can matter down the stretch.

For the Jazz, the Cup works as an early testing point to see how quickly they can mesh well.

In recent years, winning the NBA Cup has translated into postseason success. Last season, the New York Knicks became the first team to win the Cup and the championship in the same season. The Los Angeles Lakers and Milwaukee Bucks, previous winners, lost in the first round of the playoffs.

The Jazz don't need to treat the tournament as a title chase or as the be-all and end-all of where they stand.

Here are some things to watch for during these high-intensity games.

Jaren Jackson Jr. and Lauri Markkanen will share the frontcourt against teams with different looks and sizes. Darryn Peterson will face four different defenses with film on him by mid-November. Will Hardy will learn how deep his rotation really is as the games fall into a weekly rhythm.

Two regular-season games between Dec. 4-11 remain unscheduled and will be determined by the results of Cup group play. Teams that advance will play in the quarterfinals. Teams that don't will fill the schedule with standard regular-season games.

The four NBA Cup games do not define the Jazz season in any way. If they do perform well and make the quarterfinals, while beating conference rivals in the process, fans will be eager to see how they play into the winter.
