The former Ole Miss standout’s second NBA stint ended in 48 hours, signaling a strategic roster shuffle that likely funnels the defensive specialist back into the G League.
Matt Murrell waited nearly 11 months for another contract with the Utah Jazz. This one lasted two days.
The Jazz waived Murrell on Wednesday, bringing an almost immediate end to his second stint on Utah's NBA roster after the organization announced his signing Monday.
For a player who spent his entire rookie season working his way through Utah's developmental pipeline, that's quite the turnaround … although the contract itself provides some important context.
Over the Apron lists Murrell's latest agreement with Utah as an Exhibit 10 contract — the same type of deal he signed with the organization last year.
And that's where this starts to look a little familiar.
Utah signed Murrell to an Exhibit 10 contract on Sept. 22, 2025, after he went undrafted following five seasons at Ole Miss. The Jazz waived him Oct. 6 before Murrell eventually joined the Salt Lake City Stars.
He spent the next season making sure Utah had a reason to bring him back.
Murrell appeared in 44 games for the Stars, including 20 starts, while averaging 10.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.3 steals. His rookie season also came with some hardware.
Murrell scored 17 points off the bench in the 2025 G League Winter Showcase championship game, helping Salt Lake City beat Raptors 905, 137-112, to claim the title.
Eleven months after Utah first waived him, all of that work led Murrell right back to an NBA contract with the Jazz … for about 48 hours.
Utah brought the 24-year-old guard back Monday, although the team did not disclose the terms of his new agreement. By Wednesday, he was back on waivers.
It's certainly a jarring turnaround on its face — especially after Murrell spent an entire season in Utah's developmental system — but the reported Exhibit 10 structure adds some context.
Those contracts can provide a pathway for waived players to remain within an organization's developmental system through its G League affiliate. Whether Murrell follows that path again remains to be seen.
He certainly knows the route.
Murrell's first Jazz contract ended with a waiver before he spent a season with the Stars building his case for another opportunity. Utah eventually gave him one … and two days later, Murrell finds himself back in a familiar position.
Where he goes from here will determine whether this week's brief reunion was the end of his time in Utah or simply another stop along a road he already knows quite well.
