Can he live up to the expectations?
Utah Jazz head coach Will Hardy is regarded around the league as one of the better young coaches in the NBA. He has the respect of his players, is a brilliant basketball mind and can game plan and scheme with the best of them.
But when it comes down to true expectations, Hardy hasn’t necessarily had many during his time as a head coach.
That’s often the reality for coaches overseeing a rebuild. There’s less pressure to win because success is measured differently. It’s more about player development, building for the future and putting young players in situations where they can expand their games. Coaches can experiment with lineups, gather data on which combinations work and prioritize development even when it doesn’t always result in wins.
This season will be very different for Hardy. The Jazz are entering a new phase in which there’s an expectation to take a significant step forward and win more games. That brings additional pressure and a completely different outlook on how decisions are evaluated. Utah no longer has the same long leash to simply play young players through mistakes as long as they’re developing. Winning matters now.
All signs point to Hardy being well-equipped for that challenge, but it’s still something he hasn’t had the opportunity to prove at this level. Can he consistently pull extra wins out of a talented roster? Can he maximize each player when every game matters more and rotations become less about experimentation? Eventually, it comes down to whether those same qualities translate to playoff basketball, where adjustments and game-to-game scheming become even more important.
There are plenty of coaches who thrive during the regular season before struggling to make the same impact in the playoffs. Hardy hasn’t even had the opportunity to gain that postseason experience as a head coach yet, so it’ll be years before there’s a complete picture of what he can become.
But this season represents the beginning of a new era for Hardy. The rebuild has given way to real expectations, and how he handles that transition will be one of the more interesting Jazz storylines to watch.
Even with how important it is that the players on this roster ultimately end up rounding into shape to build a contender, the coach and his staff for any NBA franchise is also extremely important. Determining whether or not Hardy is the coach of the future in Utah will start to be truly analyzed this season.
