This contest has NBA Draft implications written all over it. But who has the upper hand between Sacramento and Utah?
The Sacramento Kings are teetering towards the wrong kind of franchise history.
The Utah Jazz, meanwhile, have joined the Kings in this scenario: Pursuing the top pick of the 2026 NBA Draft Lottery.
This Western Conference showdown inside the Delta Center carries draft night implications. Both teams are 20 games under .500 -- including the Jazz at 17-37 overall.
NBC Sports California will air Kings at Jazz at 6 p.m. PT. Fans who don't have access to that channel can turn to NBA League Pass. Premium ($114.99) offers no commercials and more in-arena access to players and coaches. Standard ($79.99) comes with commercials but limited in-arena elements.
Both teams appear to be trending in the same direction -- and not in a good way. Sacramento finds itself in worse shape with a 12-43 mark and now, one loss away from tying a franchise-worse 14-game losing streak.
Yet, both went in opposite directions during the NBA Trade market.
Utah became an aggressive player ahead of the Feb. 5 trade deadline...far more assertive compared to Sacramento. Kings general manager Scott Perry pulled off just one multi-player deal that sent Keon Ellis and Dennis Schroeder to the Cleveland Cavaliers and Dario Saric to the Chicago Bulls. De'Andre Hunter came over via the deal.
Hunter, however, is dealing with a rare eye injury and will be out for this contest. Perry managed to keep his other trade candidates in DeMar DeRozan, Domantas Sabonis, and Malik Monk after weeks of speculation.
But DeRozan's Monday actions paint a picture of tensions finally boiling over. DeRozan threw down a water bottle in disgust during the third quarter of the New Orleans Pelicans loss. DeRozan mentioned how "self-inflicted" wounds on the Kings' side led to the water bottle throwdown.
His head coach Doug Christie, however, acknowledged that DeRozan was simply wearing his competitive side on his shoulders and it spilled over. He still envisions DeRozan as a vital part of this Kings roster.
Except this roster will undergo changes after the season -- even after the February trade deadline. Multiple reports indicate that Sabonis and the Toronto Raptors will reconvene talks during NBA Draft week -- when teams can resume trades especially for additional draft capital.
Monk is another who could likely hear renewed trade chatter. The key reserve originally rose as a candidate to be moved before Christmas.
Even DeRozan's future entered the conversation among local media in Sacramento. Buyout thoughts for his contract now surfaced after the Pelicans loss.
Things are imploding worse in California's state capitol. Hence why the Jazz are the six-point favorite here per FanDuel Sportsbook. Utah will likely pass over the line here.
