DeMarcus Cousins hails Darius Acuff Jr. as a franchise-altering talent while general manager Scott Perry overhauls the roster to launch a bold new era in Sacramento.
The Sacramento Kings haven't had a future to look forward to, barring the 2022-23 season, but former franchise star DeMarcus Cousins believes Darius Acuff Jr. changes that fate.
Cousins was interviewed during Sacramento's Summer League matchup against the Washington Wizards on Sunday. He sang Acuff Jr.'s praises, especially highlighting their connection with coach John Calipari.
“I’m a huge fan,” Cousins said. “Obviously, he’s part of that Calipari family, so he’s extended family. Even though he’s an Arkansas Razorback or whatever the case may be, I’m a huge fan from afar.”
The former Kings center believes Acuff Jr. is a franchise-changing player. Having led the SEC in points and assists as a freshman at Arkansas, Sacramento's seventh overall pick has the potential to alter the franchise's direction.
Acuff Jr. was the SEC Player of the Year, SEC Rookie of the Year and earned Consensus All-American honors last season. He led the Razorbacks to a 28-9 record (13-5 SEC) and a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Tournament before the Arizona Wildcats eliminated them.
Cousins also praised general manager Scott Perry for his team vision for the organization. Perry is slowly but surely changing the team's DNA, and it's starting with a youth movement.
“I’m excited for the Kings. I’m excited for his future,” Cousins said. “I think he’s in a good position as far as with management. Scott Perry has come in; they’ve taken over. I look forward to everything moving on up for this group.”
Alongside Acuff Jr., Sacramento also drafted Alex Karaban and Emanuel Sharp. The two are older, experienced rookies and bring a winning pedigree to the organization.
Karaban hails from UConn and finished his career with a 116-24 record. Sharp played hard-nosed defense under coach Kelvin Sampson at Houston, and the program made four straight Sweet 16 appearances, including a national championship game appearance in 2025.
Perry is also trying to find ways to reduce the Kings' payroll. DeMar DeRozan was recently waived, as $10 million of his $25 million salary was guaranteed, and he is still attempting to move off Zach LaVine or Domantas Sabonis.
Sacramento's general manager has held the position for two seasons and is actively trying to overhaul the team. Former general manager Monte McNair had success overhauling the team, which led to breaking a 16-year playoff drought. Perry aims to do the same.
It may be a while before the Kings reclaim the playoff glory they reached in 2023, but Acuff Jr. could be the franchise cornerstone that serves as the foundation of the next era in Sacramento.
