The Sacramento Kings (12-44) have had little to look forward to throughout this season, but the 2025-26 campaign will be worth playing for the development of rookie center Maxime Raynaud.
Sacramento's No. 42 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft continues to impress through his surprising touch around the basket, rebounding prowess and overall consistency.
Despite the Kings' ongoing 14-game losing streak, Raynaud has decided to claim that stretch for himself as the team deals with a growing laundry list of injuries.
Over the course of Sacramento's past five losses, the 22-year-old frontcourt presence averaged 12.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.2 steals while shooting 59.5% from the field and 90.9% at the free-throw line in just 27.1 minutes, boosting his chances of taking home the 2025-26 Rookie of the Year award.
Though it seems far-fetched, Raynaud has positioned himself within the top-5 on the NBA's Rookie of the Year ladder prior to the All-Star Break, according to NBA.com's Steve Aschburner.
This is a massive accomplishment for a big man selected nearly halfway through the second round of the draft, but Raynaud can still use the Kings' remaining 26 games to further bolster his case.
Will the 7-foot-1 center eventually steal the award away from the Dallas Mavericks' generational talent Cooper Flagg or his former Duke University teammate and current Charlotte Hornets shooting guard Kon Knueppel? It does not appear likely.
With that being said, eventually overtaking a few other top rookies on the list such as the Philadelphia 76ers' V.J. Edgecombe and the New Orleans Pelicans' Derik Queen would help him to establish his territory as a top up-and-coming center in the league.
In his first 48 appearances for Sacramento, Raynaud has done his best to fill Domantas Sabonis' shoes by contributing 9.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 0.5 steals and 0.5 blocks on a 59.4% true shooting percentage.
His introduction to the NBA has already come with a few memorable performances, including a ridiculous 21-point, 19-rebound night against the Pelicans on Monday.
Sacramento's focus has remained fully on the tank and placing themselves in the best possible position to acquire a franchise-altering talent in the draft this summer, and Raynaud's promising effort provides a sign to Scott Perry's front office that they're on the right track.
When playing alongside the Kings' veteran play-makers in Russell Westbrook and Domantas Sabonis, Raynaud has already shown to have a bit of natural chemistry with both.
Westbrook won't be around for long, and Sabonis could be gone as soon as this offseason, but his ability to mesh well with passing talents of all positions is a welcome sign that he'll develop nicely alongside Sacramento's future distributors.
