Kings chase Jonathan Kuminga, but rivals believe Golden State may hold out. A looming deadline brings uncertainty and potential complications.
The Sacramento Kings have been fielding the trade market for a solid young prospect with star-level upside to potentially lead the franchise into the future, and no name on their list has been circled and underlined as many times as Jonathan Kuminga's.
At just 23 years old, the explosive wing and former No. 7 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors has become one of the most talked-about trade chips leading up to the Feb. 5 trade deadline, and the Kings have remained in the thick of things regarding his future.
Sacramento's interest in acquiring the athletic forward and 2022 NBA champion has been chronicled since this past offseason, when discussions of a sign-and-trade from Golden State were still ongoing prior to his return to the team as a restricted free agent.
The Kings remain on the prowl for Kuminga as it's been made clear that his wish is to be dealt, but a recent update from NBA on Prime insider Chris Haynes has indicated that a few complications may arise as the deadline day inches closer.
"Sources have informed me that Kuminga has no desire to remain a member of the Golden State Warriors," Haynes shared Thursday night.
"He is very much hoping that he will be dealt by the deadline."
"I will say this, the Kings are one of the teams that remain interested in acquiring Jonathan Kuminga, but there are other rival teams out there that believe that the Warriors might just hold onto Kuminga and wait until the summer to offload."
Though Kuminga clearly wants to join another franchise to begin anew with hopes of developing into an All-Star caliber talent, it will ultimately be up to the Warriors' general manager Mike Dunleavy to pull the trigger on a deal.
Sacramento isn't in a rush to complete a deal for Kuminga, but it surely would be nice for it to happen sooner rather than later considering the unique position the franchise is in.
The Kings have a chance to capitalize on the Warriors' perceived desperation after Jimmy Butler's unfortunate season-ending ACL tear, as they can provide the fading dynasty with a difference-making player, or two, in exchange for Kuminga to keep Stephen Curry's title dreams alive.
Specifically, a player like Malik Monk can help the Warriors and Curry in the present, giving them another reliable ball-handler and one-on-one shot creator for the second half of the 2025-26 campaign and for at least one more full season after that.
Monk would then have the opportunity to decline his player option for the 2027-28 season when he'll be just 29 years old, but Golden State's front office would likely be fine with that idea considering Curry will reach 40 years of age in early 2028.
Trading for Monk would allow the Warriors to convince Curry that reinforcements are on the way, and if another key rotational piece like Keon Ellis were to be thrown in as a sweetener, then Kuminga would be a much easier asset to let go of.
