Kings Sink to New Low in Latest Power Rankings cover image

Sacramento continues to falter, and now that includes the Kings earning an even lower grade in this outlet's power rankings.

The Sacramento Kings are urged to create a unique 2026 New Year's resolution.

But one an NBA analyst believes will benefit the roster moving forward.

The proposal Law Murray of The Athletic suggests? In three words -- free the vets.

Murray believes it's time to clean house now more than even in the state capitol of California. He also handed Sacramento this new low grade in his newest power rankings released Monday.

The Kings now sit at 30th overall...dead last in the league. Murray detailed why Sacramento drops from No. 27 to the last ranking.

"There was a gripe about how the Kings should be given more grace because their schedule has been so difficult. And then they lost to the Clippers by 40 points," Murray said.

That Clippers trouncing becomes alarming for the state of the Kings. L.A. entered having a low record too and walloped a veteran-heavy Kings team.

"The schedule you played is going to look hard if you lose the games. And no team has looked more overmatched this season than Sacramento," Murray said.

Sacramento even rolls with past NBA All-Stars on any given night. That includes watching Zach LaVine drop 20 points off the bench despite taking the lopsided loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Sunday night. LaVine earned 36 total minutes in his return from an ankle injury.

Russell Westbrook is another trying to carry the scoring load -- even in his 37-year-old body. Westbrook scored 21 points but is looking like he needs one last change of scenery before he calls it a career.

DeMar DeRozan is one last notable veteran who has many fans believing he deserves more. DeRozan is another who's led the scoring charge on occasion despite being 36 years of age. He's averaging 18.3 points per night for Sacramento -- but many analysts believe he deserves to suit up for a contender ahead of the NBA's trade deadline.

LaVine is one last veteran hearing trade chatter. A report from Evan Sidery of Forbes indicated that the Bucks were interested in LaVine at one point.

"Milwaukee would send out Kyle Kuzma and Bobby Portis, but Sacramento is adamant about their 2031 1st being involved," Sidery said on the social media website X, formerly Twitter. "With Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future, there’s trepidation to include this pick."

Sacramento sits at 8-28 overall and looking more realistic at landing the top pick in the NBA Draft lottery. As Murray states, he feels it's time to free the vets.
