The Sacramento Kings appear to be in a good position to acquire Detroit Pistons center Jalen Duren based on the latest development.
The Sacramento Kings have been linked in rumors throughout the offseason when it comes to acquiring Detroit Pistons center Jalen Duren, and it appears they could be in a good position based on the latest news that came out.
On Monday morning, ESPN Senior NBA insider Shams Charania reported that Duren is not attending the Pistons media day and has declined the five-year $200 million contract (with a weight clause) offer thus far, while both sides remain at a stalemate ahead of the Thursday deadline for Duren to sign a one-year $9.6 million qualifying offer.
This is a very interesting development for the Pistons and Duren because it does appear that both sides are not on the same and it seem that Detroit may have to part ways with Duren whether it be a trade or in free agency next offseason.
When it comes to the Pistons potentially having to part ways with Duren, the Kings may be able to really benefit from that. Throughout the offseason, there have been reports that there is mutual interest between Duren and the Kings in joining forces, whether that be by acquiring him in a trade or waiting until next offseason when he becomes an unrestricted free agent.
On that note, the Kings do have some cap space to clear if they want to acquire Duren via a trade this season, as guard Zach LaVine, forward DeAndre Hunter, and center Domantas Sabonis are all making a significant amount of money, which does mean Sacramento does not have enough cap space at this point to get Duren and sign him to the max contract he is seeking.
The Kings may have a solution for this, as according to reports throughout the offseason, they have been trying to trade Sabonis to clear the space they need. The only issue is that it appears Sabonis may have negative trade value, but if Sabonis can have a strong start to the season, that could give Sacramento the leverage they need to trade Sabonis elsewhere and have the cap space to acquire Duren and sign him to a max contract.
With that said, it is going to be very interesting to see how this situatiuon develops, especially with the development of Duren not attending the Pistons media and that Thursday is the deadline for him to sign the one-year qualifying offer.
So, moving forward, it will be intriguing to watch if Duren does sign the one-year qualifying offer before Thursday, if the Kings can trade Sabonis, and if Sacramento makes a move for Duren at some point before or during the 2026 season, or if talks pick up a lot more when he becomes an unrestricted free agent in the 2027 offseason.
