Kings Welcoming Another Russell Westbrook Campaign for 2026-27 cover image

Will Sacramento run it back with the veteran guard despite the state of the roster? A new report reveals both parties could have another run left.

The Sacramento Kings don't look like they plan to sever ties with Russell Westbrook after this season.

New intel revealed by Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints points toward Westbrook running it back with the franchise. Even despite the current roster makeup and the increased probability of landing the top pick of the NBA Draft come June.

"With the Kings, Westbrook has really made the most of his opportunity, and he's been a leading voice both on and off the court for the young players on this roster," Siegel wrote on Friday.

Siegel adds how the 37-year-old is well-respected inside the facility and displays professionalism around his teammates and coaches.

"Westbrook has the respect of his teammates and the Kings' coaching staff, so why would he want to think about leaving?" Siegel said. "For the first time in a long time, Westbrook is actually with a team that values his production and skills."

Siegel includes how at this stage, the nine-time NBA All-Star Westbrook likely won't command a high market compared to years past.

"If he were to be waived, there is no guarantee right now that another team would even sign him," Siegel included.

But could there still be some interested teams, especially the contenders who may envision Westbrook for extra leadership?

"Should interest exist from a playoff-contending team, I am sure Westbrook would strongly consider such an option, but it doesn't appear as if that's the case right now," Siegel said.

While it appears the Kings and Westbrook aren't heading toward severance anytime soon, a lot of factors still play out ahead of March 1 -- which is the deadline for NBA buyouts.

"Assuming Westbrook stays with the Kings entering March, it would not be shocking to see him sign another contract with the Kings in the summer," Siegel said.

Westbrook is averaging 15.3 points per game with the Kings -- more than what he delivered last season with the Denver Nuggets. That average is also an improvement from the 11.1 PPG he produced the previous season with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Westbrook didn't play against the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday due to a lower body injury -- but watched Precious Achiuwa drop 29 points and Daeqwon Plowden deliver 19 in the upset win.
