Sacramento explores moving their All-Star center to Charlotte for a haul of athletic talent and draft capital, potentially clearing a path for breakout rookie Maxime Raynaud.
Sacramento Kings center Domantas Sabonis continues to be a popular name mentioned as a trade target, with the Charlotte Hornets emerging as a frontrunner for the 3-time All-Star.
On Wednesday, Senior NBA Insider Michael Scotto outlined the potential framework being discussed between the two teams.
"The Sacramento Kings and Charlotte Hornets had exploratory trade talks surrounding Domantas Sabonis," league sources told HoopsHype. "One framework loosely kicked around included Charlotte’s Miles Bridges, Josh Green, and a potential first-round draft pick going to Sacramento in exchange for Sabonis."
Later reports added that the Hornets have been hesitant to include a first-round pick in the deal, confirming that the deal is "not imminent."
Charlotte currently picks No. 14 and 18 in the upcoming NBA Draft, which could be enticing for the Kings' front office, especially in this year's loaded class.
Bridges, who has played at a high level consistently in Charlotte, would be a significant pay cut from Sabonis, entering the final year of his 3-year deal.
Adding Bridges would provide the Kings with a huge upgrade in athleticism and shot creation at the rim, while giving the front office flexibility regarding his future beyond the 2026 season.
Maxime Raynaud, who is coming off of a Second-Team All Rookie season, would also be given the full-time starting role, allowing him to continue to grow alongside the Kings' core.
Raynaud, last draft's No. 42 overall pick, was the lone second round pick represented on either rookie team, far outplaying his original standing.
The french big man averaged 12.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, recording a rookie-class best 18 double-doubles.
The 7-foot-1 Stanford product really came into his own after the All-Star Break, earning Rookie of the Month honors in March.
For the Hornets, the roster desperately needs help in the front court to supplement its young, exciting core.
Charlotte showed flashes of competitiveness towards the end of the season, rallying around rookie Kon Knueppel, LaMelo Ball, and Brandon Miller.
Sabonis would fit the Hornets' fast, 3-point heavy scheme, as the 3-time All-Star can initiate offense from the perimeter.
The Hornets would also have the cap space to pay Sabonis down the line, benefiting from Miller and Knueppel's rookie contracts.
While these talks are mostly preliminary, it is good to see the types of offers being floated for Sabonis, giving the Kings' front office insight on his value.
While moving on from a multi-time All Star is never easy, Sabonis' injury concerns, hefty contract, and Raynaud's strong debut season may force Sacramento's hand.
