The Knicks decided to waive the former NBA champion.

Before the start of training camp, the New York Knicks signed veteran guard Bruce Brown to give him a chance to make the roster for the regular season. He appeared in the team's preseason games, but according to ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania, the Knicks decided to waive him.

In the two preseason games he appeared in with New York, he averaged just 4.5 points per game and was not very productive. Brown did not show much in the preseason, and the coaching staff may have thought that could be an indicator of the future.

Brown is 30 years old and is looking for a spot in the NBA after the Denver Nuggets let him walk in the offseason. While his production has declined, he still has the abilities that have let him have a lengthy career.

Bruce Brown is known to be a player who can be a threat on the perimeter on both ends of the floor. When he was on the Denver Nuggets in 2023 during their championship run, he played his role well, and it led to him getting a contract with the Indiana Pacers later that summer.

When looking at Brown's skill set, it matches a lot of the Knicks' players. New York is a team that likes to turn defense into offense and play at a fast pace, and Brown could have been someone who could step into that role in the case of an injury.

Players like Miles McBride and Josh Hart have a similar play style to Brown, and in the case of an injury, he could have stepped in and helped out this Knicks second unit. Clearly, his play was not inspiring enough for New York to keep him around, and it may be for the best.

In terms of depth, the Knicks are in a good spot at the guard position. They have young guards like Tyler Kolek and Tyler Nickel who are developing, and they brought back Jose Alvarado and Landry Shamet in the offseason, two players who had big moments on the way to a championship.

Overall, the Knicks may not be missing out on Bruce Brown moving forward. They will have multiple options at guard off the bench, and they have so much continuity from their championship team, so veteran presence will be a major need for them this season. It will be interesting to see who steps up in moments where key guards get hurt.
