The New York Knicks walked away as winners on Tuesday in the NBA Cup Quarterfinals, defeating the Toronto Raptors and punching their ticket to Las Vegas for the Semifinals, where they'll face the Orlando Magic for the fourth time this season. In the third year of the tournament, the Knicks will look to keep the trophy in the Eastern Conference after the Milwaukee Bucks won last year.
Leading the efforts for the Knicks was Jalen Brunson, as his game-high 35 points helped the team to a 117-101 victory. With the team moving on, Brunson was asked after the game about the team's motivation for chasing the title and the prize money that comes along with it.
"I think it's good because, like, we have a lot of guys obviously making a lot of money on this team, and then we have guys and coaches who may not make as much. So it's an opportunity for them to get a little extra money. So we're not just playing for ourselves, we're playing for the guys who are there every day, cutting up film...we're playing for more than just us," Brunson said.
Taking a look at the Knicks' current salary table, six players are making over $10 million this season, which includes Karl-Anthony Towns ($53.1 million), OG Anunoby ($39.5 million), Jalen Brunson ($34.9 million), Mikal Bridges ($24.9 million), Josh Hart ($19.4 million), and Mitchell Robinson ($12.9 million).
Therefore, the prize money for some of the players is massive, as you'll get $530,000 if you win the NBA Cup. That's for players who are on standard contracts, though, and the head coach, but still a massive payout for players like Tyler Kolek and Ariel Hukporti who make around $2 million this season.
As mentioned by Brunson, they are also doing this for the assistant coaches, who don't receive the $530,000 prize for winning, but receive a portion of that, which is significant nonetheless. So far, the Knicks' standard contract players and head coach will receive $106,000 if they were to be eliminated by the Magic in the semifinals.
The Knicks will see the Magic at 5:30 p.m. EST on Saturday, December 13th, looking to even their regular-season series at 2-2, as the Magic have won the first two contests, with the Knicks winning their recent game. With Franz Wagner now sidelined for an extended period of time, the Knicks should look to take advantage of a Magic side without one of their stars.
