Josh Hart Explains What Went Wrong in Embarrassing Loss to Pacers cover image

The Knicks suffered a shocking loss to the Pacers on Tuesday.

The New York Knicks fell in a heartbreaker to the lackluster Indiana Pacers 137-134 in overtime on Tuesday and that kind of loss should give the Knicks a lot to think about.

By all accounts, Tuesday's game should have been a breeze for the Knicks. Without Tyrese Haliburton the Pacers have been struggling severely and hold just a 14-40 record, while the Knicks have stood out as one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference all season and have especially been on a roll in recent weeks.

But instead of a cakewalk, the Knicks were treated to a brawl all game. They fought to have a six point advantage over the Pacers at halftime, but the game never seemed like it was going to swing New York's way.

A Back-and-Fourth Second Half

Things became even more dire in the second half. Indiana outscored New York by seven in the third quarter to erase that hard fought halftime lead and put up just as much of a fight in the fourth.

As hard as the Knicks fought in the fourth, they just could not keep the Pacers at bay. For every shot that the Knicks made, the Pacers matched them and robbed New York of any kind of advantage.

If anything, the Pacers were actually the ones that held the advantage throughout the fourth and it looked like it was their game to lose, not the Knicks.

Indiana With the Advantage

The Knicks were actually coming from behind near the end of the game and the only thing that really saved them were some last minute fouls that they drew to send Mikal Bridges and Karl Anthony-Towns to the line to tie the game up with free throws in the very last seconds and send the game into overtime.

Like the fourth quarter, overtime belonged to the Pacers. Indiana opened overtime with a 9-0 run to grab a lead of New York that the Pacers never let up and by the end of the period the Pacers were up by three to take home the win in what proved to be one of the most shocking losses of the season for the Knicks.

Overconfidence Finished the Knicks

Underestimating the Pacers because of their paltry season proved to be the Knicks' downfall and they became too complacent with their defensive effort, which led the Pacers to take advantage with a standout offensive night.

"We let them get a little comfortable, and then down the stretch, lack of execution. We've got to make sure [at] the end of the game, fourth quarter, overtime, that it's a little bit different," Josh Hart said (via SNY Knicks).

Closing games has been one of the Knicks' biggest problems throughout the season and it showed up in the worst way against the Pacers in a collapse that New York certainly won't forget anytime soon.
