The bond between Towns and Brunson started with a promise and ended with a title.
When Karl-Anthony Towns arrived in New York after the October 2024 trade from Minnesota, he walked into a locker room that already had its leader.
Jalen Brunson had spent two years turning himself into the face of the franchise, and most players in Towns' spot would have used those first few days figuring out where they fit.
Speaking on The Roommates Show with Brunson and Josh Hart, Towns shared what he told the Knicks guard the day he first got to town.
"I told you that first day I got here, and you welcomed me here into New York, I said I want to make sure I amplify you to a whole 'nother level that you haven't even recognized for yourself," Towns said.
Towns wasn't finished.
"I want to be that partner in crime that you haven't had, and I want to make sure that every step of the way, anytime you go anywhere, you're never alone," Towns continued. "You always have someone behind you that's ready to do whatever is needed, to protect you, to protect this city."
Then came the ask. Towns told Brunson he only wanted one thing in return, and he pointed at the Larry O'Brien Trophy.
A Promise Delivered
Plenty of players say things like that after getting traded, but what set this apart is that Towns and Brunson actually followed through.
The Knicks went 53-29 during the regular season and tore through the Eastern Conference before beating the San Antonio Spurs in five games to win their first NBA championship in 53 years.
Nobody expected a run like that, and Towns and Brunson were at the center of it.
Towns put up 20.1 points and 11.9 rebounds per game during the regular season while adjusting his style to fit around Brunson, who averaged 26.0 points and 6.8 assists on his way to earning Finals MVP after scoring 45 in the Game 5 clincher.
The partnership worked because Towns never tried to take the spotlight and instead leaned into defense and rebounding during the playoffs while stepping up next to Brunson when it counted most.
More Than Basketball
What connected Towns and Brunson went beyond the stat sheet.
After New York's Game 2 win over the Spurs, Towns told Brunson on camera that he would never be by himself and that he'd be with him every step of the way.
That trust showed up all season, from the regular season grind through the final minutes of the championship clincher, and it turned what could have been a tough fit into one of the best duos in the league heading into next year.
Both players are under contract and a trophy is already in the building.
Towns came to New York with a promise, and Brunson helped him keep it.
