Knicks Bolster G League Roster By Signing and Waiving Two Players cover image

In the aftermath of guard Malcolm Brogdon announcing his retirement from the New York Knicks and the NBA, the team made two moves designed to bolster their G League Roster. The Knicks signed two players bound for Westchester.

The New York Knicks added two players to the training camp roster on Thursday, but they will not see the floor at Madison Square Garden.

The team signed and then waived guard Donovan Williams. They also signed forward Isaiah Roby. Both players signed Exhibit 10 deals, which essentially have them ticketed to Westchester and the G League. Roby was also waived and will be assigned to the G League.

Exhibit 10 contracts are designed to allow a team to give a player a look and then provide various incentives in the event they are waived, which include a designation to the G League.

With the regular season a week away, it was thought the Knicks might look to replace point guard Malcolm Brogdon who walked away from the game on Wednesday. There were no such moves.

Williams played for Westchester last season before leaving to play for the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association. While in Westchester, Williams averaged 17.8 points to lead the league in scoring average. He also shot 46 percent from the field.

Williams has been around the G League before. He has played with the Brooklyn Nets entry on Long Island in 2023. He even played two games for the big club against the Atlanta Hawks later that season.

Roby, on the other hand, signed with the Knicks back in 2023 and played in two preseason games. He averaged 8.5 points in those games and shot 54 percent from the field. He was a draft pick in 2019 and played in 26 games for the G League affiliate in White Plains during 2023-2024. He averaged 13.7 points and eight rebounds as White Plains won the title.

Roby was out of the country last season as he spent the year playing in Germany.

The former Nebraska star played for the San Antonio Spurs, Oklahoma City Thunder and Dallas Mavericks. He has 151 appearances with those clubs. While he is ticketed for the G League, he could be called up to Manhattan should the need arise if anything were to happen to Mitchell Robinson or Karl-Anthony Towns.
