The New York Knicks have had a rollercoaster ride over their last four games, beating two of the top teams in the NBA but also suffering brutal losses along the way. It started with an overtime win over the Denver Nuggets, but was short-lived after a blowout loss against the Detroit Pistons.
The Knicks would turn around and bounce back on the road against the Boston Celtics, setting themselves up for a chance to secure back-to-back wins on Tuesday night against the Indiana Pacers. A rematch of the Eastern Conference Finals from a year ago, the result unfortunately went that same way.
Even though the Pacers were without key members of that conference finals team, most notably Tyrese Haliburton, they still got production from Pascal Siakam and Andrew Nembhard as they pulled off a 137-134 overtime upset to defeat the Knicks.
The Knicks had some strong performances as well, such as a 40-point game from Jalen Brunson and a 15-point triple-double from Josh Hart, but the Pacers had the edge in three-point shooting, which proved to be a key deciding factor.
New York struggled shooting the ball late in the game, having an 11-for-26 shooting stretch from the fourth quarter to overtime. After the game, Mike Brown shared his thoughts on what transpired.
“I thought Jalen down the stretch had some pretty good looks. He got to his spot. Or he got to the spots that he normally gets to. He just came up short. But we got the ball where we needed to get the ball, and we got the looks that we wanted to look for during that time," Brown said (according to Ian Begley).
Brunson might've finished with 40 points, but he went 4-of-9 from the field in the fourth quarter, including going 0-3 from three-point range.
"Sometimes they just don’t go in, and tonight was one of those nights,” Brown added.
The Knicks were at the top of the NBA just a few games ago, riding an eight-game winning streak after defeating one of the best teams in the NBA. Now, they've gone just 1-2 in their past three games, with a head-scratching loss against the Pacers highlighting it all.
Looking ahead for the Knicks, they have just one game left before the All-Star break, as they'll face the Philadelphia 76ers on the road on Wednesday for the second leg of a back-to-back. A win would help the team a lot heading into the break, while a loss would raise plenty of questions on how to address the second half of the season.
