As the celebration fades and preparations for the 2026-27 season continue, the front office faces another major challenge: deciding whether to offer Karl-Anthony Towns a lucrative contract extension.
The expectation is that New York will present Towns with an extension offer, according to The Athletic. The bigger question is whether the Knicks are willing to commit the full four-year, $272 million maximum extension he becomes eligible to receive.

Championship Success Creates Difficult Choice
Towns has quickly become one of the cornerstones of New York's roster since arriving from the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The six-time All-Star averaged 20.1 points, 11.9 rebounds and 3.0 assists while shooting 50.1% from the field during the 2025-26 regular season. He followed that with another productive postseason, helping guide the Knicks to their first NBA title in 53 years.
Despite those accomplishments, Edwards noted there are legitimate reasons for New York to proceed carefully.
Towns turns 31 during the upcoming season, and a maximum extension would keep him under contract well into his mid-30s. While he remains one of the league's most skilled offensive big men, long-term deals for veteran centers often carry added risk as players age.
The Knicks also have significant financial commitments throughout the roster. Jalen Brunson is expected to receive another extension in the future, while Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby and Josh Hart are all part of the team's long-term core.

Edwards believes the Knicks will likely make an extension offer, but he questioned whether it would reach the full maximum value.
From Towns' perspective, accepting less than the maximum may not be an easy decision. He helped deliver a championship, remains one of the NBA's premier frontcourt players and has consistently produced throughout his career, averaging 22.8 points and 11.1 rebounds across 11 NBA seasons.
