The New York Knicks are in search of frontcourt depth.
The New York Knicks didn’t make many changes in the offseason, but they could still be looking to add as they prepare to defend their NBA Championship.
The Knicks re-signed key bench players like Jose Alvarado, Landry Shamet, Jordan Clarkson, and Mohamed Diaware, but lost backup center Mitchell Robinson to the Boston Celtics. Robinson signed a three-year, $47 million deal to join Boston.
The Knicks signed veteran Andre Drummond to a one-year, $2.4 million deal to help replace Robinson, but they might not be done.
According to Jake Fischer, the Knicks did contract the New Orleans Pelicans about Yves Missi and the Charlotte Hornets about Moussa Diabte, but the conversations have not gone anywhere.
Adding A Big
It’s not a big secret that the Knicks are looking for extra help in the frontcourt.
They sent a two-year, $4.7 million offer sheet to restricted free agent Moussa Cisse of the Dallas Mavericks in hopes of prying him away, but the Mavericks opted to match the deal.
Brian Westerholt-Imagn ImagesThough Drummond has similar qualities to Robinson with his rebounding and interior play, he’s not the same defender as Robinson, and there are a lot of miles on his body. Though he just turned 33, he’s about to enter his 15th season in the league.
Missi is only 22 years old, while Diabate is only 24. The Knicks are looking to add youth to the position and potentially a more long-term replacement since Drummond isn’t expected to be around for the long haul.
Can They Get A Deal Done?
After starting 67 of 73 games with the Pelicans as a rookie, he came off the bench for the majority of last season, starting in just 14 of 66 games.
Rookie Derik Queen started half the games for the Pelicans, and Zion Williamson would play as a small ball center as well. Both of those players are still on the roster, and there might not be room for Missi as the season moves along, which is why the Knicks are likely looking into the possibility of adding him.
Diabate started in 47 of 73 games for the Hornets, but their frontcourt is beginning to get a little crowded. Naz Reid, Grant Williams, Tidjane Salaun, Hannes Steinbach, and Ryan Kalkbrenner are all expected to get playing time this season.
Someone is going to be the odd man out, and the Knicks are hoping to make that decision easy for the Hornets.
