LeBron went into detail about stopping Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns.
The New York Knicks opened their 2026-2027 regular-season campaign with a loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, falling 106-100. The Knicks had times when they were in control of the game, but the 76ers' talent overmatched New York down the stretch.
The 76ers have five all-star-caliber players across their starting lineup, and one of their most notable additions, LeBron James, was clearly a big help to this group because of his versatility and high IQ.
The 76ers were able to contain the tandem of Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns, and after the game, LeBron talked about what went into keeping them in check and why it was crucial on their way to their first win of the season.
Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images"Obviously, KAT is very dangerous when he has space. Anytime JB is handling the ball with KAT popping, it creates a long closeout for guys trying to get to that shot," LeBron said.
James also mentioned that when Towns had the ball on the catch, ready to shoot it, it was important for him to be there as soon as he had the ball, giving him less space to get a good shot off.
Moving forward, teams may start to look at how LeBron and Philadelphia were able to find a strategy to defend the Knicks' efficient pick-and-pop offense, and if the Knicks don't adjust, it could be an issue for the rest of the season.
Geoff Burke-Imagn ImagesIt is very clear that the two focal points of New York's starting lineup are Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns, and with Philadelphia being able to contain them, teams around the league will start to wonder if they can replicate it.
Another issue the Knicks ran into was the turnovers. Towns finished with 4 of them, and they contributed to the Knicks' total of 14.
76ers guard Tyrese Maxey had a clutch steal in the fourth quarter of that game as he intercepted a pass thrown by OG Anunoby. It was the exact kind of play LeBron James talked about after the game.
Brad Penner-Imagn Images76ers players were crowded around Karl-Anthony Towns and Jalen Brunson, and Maxey made a great read to intercept the ball, leading to an easy score on the other end.
Moving forward, the New York Knicks will have to find a way to recover from a game like this. If New York can adjust to what teams are doing against them on the pick-and-pop, they can find themselves where they were last summer, but until then, they could keep running into problems with the Philadelphia 76ers.
