New York Knicks head coach Mike Brown addresses Guerschon Yabusele's limited minutes recently

With the NBA trade deadline less than a week away, the New York Knicks are one of several teams expected to pursue Giannis Antetokounmpo, as well as other pieces to add to their roster in hopes of making a deep playoff run in 2026. The Knicks have plenty of guard depth, but the rest of the roster could use some additions.

One position the Knicks aren't deep at is their forward depth, with Guerschon Yabusele being the free agency acquisition that was supposed to bolster their depth there. After having a strong 2024-25 campaign in his return to the NBA, Yabusele hasn't looked the part this season, leading many to believe he could be on the trade block.

Mike Brown Addresses Yabusele's Minutes

Due to his poor play, Yabusele has seen his minutes decrease over the season, playing more than 10 minutes just once in his past eight contests. After New York's win over the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday, head coach Mike Brown was asked about what he wants to see from the French forward.

"He's gonna play whatever minutes we give him. Everybody has to keep playing hard…Whether he gets 2 minutes, 0, 15…he's gotta keep…being ready while cheering his teammates on like everyone else," Brown said.

Yabusele's situation piqued the interest of many around the NBA last week, when he took to his X account to share a cryptic post that indicated he was being traded away from the Knicks. That didn't end up being the case, well, yet that is, and perhaps that's why he hasn't been on the floor much lately.

If Yabusele is dealt, the team receiving him will hope to get the version of him from last season, that averaging 11.0 points and 5.6 rebounds while shooting 50.1% from the field and 38% from three-point range. Unfortunately, it just seems as though he won't pan out in New York.

A move to the Spurs would make a lot of sense, allowing Yabusele to team up with his international teammate, Victor Wembanyama, giving them more depth in the frontcourt. Yabusele is on a two-year, $11.2 million contract, with a player option for the 2026-27 season.

Additionally, Yabusele could just finish out the season with New York or elsewhere and then take his talents back to Europe, which wouldn't be a surprise for the 30-year-old who has played in 184 games in his NBA career up to this point.
