New York Knicks head coach Mike Brown compares Josh Hart to former NBA Finals MVP
The New York Knicks have had great success since inserting Josh Hart into the starting lineup, after head coach Mike Brown opted to start him on the bench this season, after being a full-time starter with the Knicks the year prior. The Knicks boast an 8-1 record with Hart as a starter this season, with their one loss coming on the road at Boston.
In an effort to punch the Knicks' ticket to the NBA Cup Semifinals, Hart poured in 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting, while also converting 4-of-7 attempts from beyond the arc. After the game, head coach Mike Brown was very complimentary of Hart, comparing him to a former NBA Finals MVP.
Mike Brown Compares Hart To Former Finals MVP
"I tell you what, he reminds me of Andre Iguodala from the sense if you don't really understand basketball, then it's hard to really appreciate their game. Both those guys, sometimes you look at them, and you might be like, well, he's not really this, he's not that, he can't do this, he can't. It's the opposite, they can do everything," Brown said.
Dating back to Hart's time with Villanova, he was a do-it-all guy there, averaging 18.7 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.6 steals per game as a senior, while also shooting 40.4% from three. He's been solid in his prior stops in his NBA career, but the Knicks have seemed to finally unlock him.
"There's just some things that he does that are elite, and some things that he does pretty good," Brown added.
Looking at Iguodala, he went from being an All-Star in 2012 with the Philadelphia 76ers to one of the best bench players in the NBA by the 2014-15 season. Even though he was certainly good enough to be a starter, Steve Kerr saw his value as a do-it-all guy off the bench, and he went down as one of the greatest role players in NBA history.
Iguodala set a high bar, but that doesn't mean Hart can't come close. This Knicks team, on paper, has all the makings of an NBA Finals-caliber team, and they will need to capitalize on the current state of the Eastern Conference to do so.
While Iguodala became a champion by being a starter/bench player, it looks like right now, Hart belongs in this Knicks starting lineup if he continues this level of play. There's a lot of basketball left to be played, but Hart should feel extra motivated given his head coach's recent comments.
