The Knicks say goodbye to a Knicks legend, and so does he.

Mitchell Robinson officially closed his chapter with the New York Knicks after agreeing to join the Boston Celtics on a three-year, $47.4 million deal, marking the end of an eight-year stretch in New York that defined the early portion of his NBA career.

The veteran center took to Instagram to share an emotional farewell message directed at the franchise, teammates, and fans who supported him since he entered the league.

Career with Knicks

Robinson, who was selected by the Knicks in the second round of the 2018 NBA Draft, quickly became a key interior presence known for his elite rim protection, rebounding, and shot-blocking ability. Despite injuries interrupting portions of his tenure, he remained one of the most impactful defensive anchors on the roster whenever available.

He appeared in 397 career games with the Knicks, averaging 7.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks. He shot 70.2% from the field over his career, consistently ranking among the NBA’s most efficient finishers around the rim.

In his final season in New York, he averaged 5.7 points and a career-high 8.8 rebounds while shooting 72.3% from the floor.

In his post, Robinson reflected on both the challenges and growth he experienced in New York, emphasizing gratitude rather than disappointment as he transitions to a new organization. He opened with a quote, writing, “Life’s a climb. But the view’s great,” before addressing Knicks fans directly.

His Heartfelt Message

He continued by expressing appreciation for the organization that gave him his first NBA opportunity. “New York Knicks fans and the whole Knicks organization, the past 8 years have been the highlight of my life. I can’t thank you guys enough for the journey and opportunities,” Robinson wrote.

He acknowledged the emotional nature of the moment, noting that he understands the reactions surrounding his departure and shares those feelings himself.

Robinson made it clear that, despite moving on, his connection to the franchise remains intact. He thanked the organization for everything it provided and expressed lasting respect for the city that shaped his professional identity.

“I will always have love for where it all started,” he added, before closing with a message of affection for the fan base: “I love you and will miss you! Once a Knick always a Knick 💙🧡”

The departure marks a notable shift for New York’s frontcourt rotation, as Robinson had long been considered a foundational defensive piece when healthy.

His presence in the paint helped define several Knicks lineups over the years, particularly during their recent playoff pushes where interior defense became a central identity.

Now joining a Celtics team, Robinson steps into a new environment with a different role and expectation level.

For Knicks fans, Robinson’s message serves as a reminder of his impact beyond the box score.

His development from a raw prospect into a respected NBA center was closely tied to his time in New York, and his farewell underscores the personal connection he built with the organization over nearly a decade.
