OG Anunoby shared what was going through his head as the New York Knicks were down 29 points against the San Antonio Spurs.
On Wednesday night, the New York Knicks accomplished something that no team has ever done in NBA history. Down 29 points to a more talented San Antonio Spurs team at home, the Knicks found a way to claw back and become the first team in NBA history to have a 29-point comeback.
It was a moment that'll never be forgotten by neither Spurs fans or Knicks fans.
Very few expected the Knicks to win as they were down by such a huge deficit, but OG Anunoby knew that his team just needed to weather the storm. After the Knicks completed the comeback, Anunoby addressed his team's mindset during the comeback.
OG Anunoby's Mindset During the Comeback
As the team was down by over 20 points at halftime, Anunoby had just one mindset: stay the course.
"Stay with it, we're fine," Anunoby said. "We know it's a game of runs. We're a resilient group, we've been through a lot. We've came back plenty of times when we were down."
While Jalen Brunson may have led the Knicks in scoring in Game 4, it was very clear that Anunoby was the hero of the game - securing both game-saving blocks and baskets in the clutch.
It was clear that Anunoby remained the most composed on the court, and it showed throughout the entire 48 minutes of the game.
"So, just staying with it," Anunoby added. "Weather the storm, not being too down, angry, mad, or frustrated, just staying with it. Cut it down to 18, cut it down to 12, cut it down to 6, staying with it, pushing it through. It's a 48-minute game, so just play until the end."
The Comeback Kids
Throughout the finals, the ability to have a comeback finish has actually become somewhat routine for the Knicks.
In Game 1, the New York Knicks were down 14 points, in Game 2, the New York Knicks were down 12 points, and in Game 4, the New York Knicks were down 29 points.
Yet, every single time, the Knicks found a way to win.
If there's one word that could categorize these New York Knicks in the playoffs, it's resilient. Time after time, this team has refused to quit, and that's what makes them so special. Every player on the team knows what the Knicks are capable.
"We were terrible early, got off to a horrible start," Landry Shamet said. "Huge deficit late, but this is the most proud I've been of our group. Just our collective approach from halftime on, nobody panicking."
Somehow, someway, the New York Knicks are now up 3-1 against a San Antonio Spurs team with a top-5 player in the league that also dethroned the Oklahoma City Thunder.
If fans didn't think the Knicks were the team of destiny before, it's time to start believing now.
