The New York Knicks earned one of their largest wins of the season on Friday — crushing the Denver Nuggets on the road, 142-103. Here are the key takeaways from the game.
The Knicks’ offense could not be contained, and the head of the snake was OG Anunoby.
Anunoby finished with a team-high 34 points on 64.7% shooting from the field (11-17) and 54.5% shooting from the 3-point line (6-11). It was the highest-scoring game of the season for the 28-year-old, but he made his impact on both ends of the floor.
Anunoby was a two-way menace on Friday. In addition to his 34-point effort, he also logged four steals—another team high—and a block. Through four games in March, Anunoby is averaging 14.3 points, 1.3 steals, and a block per game.
Simply put, it was not the night for Jalen Brunson as a shooter. But as a facilitator? That is a different story.
Brunson notched 15 assists for the second game in a row to tie his season high. He only scored nine points on 3-13 shooting in just under 34 minutes of action, but the kind of floor general he was able to be once again helped his teammates score all night long. He also turned the ball over just once.
Beyond Anunoby’s offensive outburst, the Knicks had a healthy diet of contributions on the offensive end as five other players finished in double figures, and Brunson was a large part of that.
Josh Hart had 18 points, Karl-Anthony Towns added 17, Mitchell Robinson had 13; Landry Shamet scored 10, and second-year forward Pacome Dadiet logged a career-high 11 points and hit all three of his attempts from the perimeter.
On most nights, Nikola Jokic is going to get his numbers, Friday was no different from a scoring perspective.
Jokic scored a game-high 38 points but did not register the triple-double he has been averaging this season. He finished with eight rebounds and five assists to add to his 38 points in 31 minutes of play, and he has been averaging 28.6 points, 12.6 rebounds, and 10.4 assists this season.
It did not remotely matter that Jokic scored as much as he did because the Knicks did not allow him any help.
New York held Jokic’s teammates in check, and by the end of the game, only three other Nuggets players reached double figures.
Jamal Murray was the second leading scorer with 12 points, and he was limited to 17 and a half minutes before heading to the locker room with an ankle injury toward the end of the second quarter.
The Knicks will have momentum as they prepare for a matchup with the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday as their West Coast trip continues.
