The defending champions will raise their banner before welcoming LeBron James and a Philadelphia team built to challenge their place atop the East.

The NBA could not have selected a more compelling matchup to headline the opening night of its 2026-27 season.

The defending champion New York Knicks will host LeBron James and the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at Madison Square Garden. The game will begin at 7 p.m. ET and air on NBC and Peacock as part of a three-game opening-night schedule.

Demand reflects the magnitude of the occasion. The current get-in price was listed at $1,999, making it the most expensive home opener in NBA history, according to TickPick.

ESPN analysts Dave McMenamin and Chiney Ogwumike captured the anticipation surrounding the matchup during a schedule-release segment.

“It’s going to be like Game 4 of the NBA Finals,” McMenamin said.

New York celebrates its championship

The Knicks will raise their first championship banner since 1973 after defeating the San Antonio Spurs in five games in the 2026 NBA Finals.

Jalen Brunson cemented his place among New York’s biggest sports stars during that run. He scored 45 points in the championship-clinching Game 5 and repeatedly delivered in late-game situations throughout the postseason.

Opening night would already carry enormous emotional significance for the Knicks and their fans. Hosting Philadelphia adds another layer because New York swept the 76ers during its championship run.

The Knicks will enter as the team everyone is chasing, but they will also face immediate pressure to prove last season was the beginning of a sustained run rather than a one-year breakthrough.

LeBron adds fuel to rivalry

James’ decision to join Philadelphia transformed an already heated Atlantic Division rivalry into the league’s biggest opening-night attraction.

The 76ers now have James alongside Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, giving them three elite offensive creators with vastly different styles. James can organize the offense, Maxey can pressure defenses with his speed and Embiid remains one of basketball’s most dominant interior scorers when healthy.

There are legitimate questions about the group’s age, durability and ability to stay on the court together. James is entering his 24th NBA season, while Embiid’s availability has remained a persistent concern throughout his career.

None of that will diminish the atmosphere at Madison Square Garden.

New York will be celebrating a championship before facing a Philadelphia team assembled specifically to win one. The Knicks eliminated the 76ers last postseason, James is beginning what could be the final chapter of his career and both organizations expect to contend for the Eastern Conference title.

The high get-in price could fluctuate considerably before game day, but the early demand illustrates how fans view the matchup. No regular-season game can replicate the stakes of the NBA Finals, but Knicks-76ers might come closer than any other game on the schedule.
