Looking at the chances of the New York Knicks repeating.

The New York Knicks look to become the first team since the Golden State Warriors in 2017 and 2018 to win back-to-back NBA Championships when they defend their title in 2026-27.

The Knicks stunned the basketball world in the 2026 playoffs, going 16-3 en route to their first title since 1973.

Led by Jalen Brunson, the Knicks put it all together during the playoffs, winning 15 of 16 games after falling behind 2-1 to the Atlanta Hawks in the first round.

There is plenty of optimism surrounding the Knicks as they begin their title defense considering they will be bringing back all five starters in Brunson, Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart, OG Anunoby, and Karl-Anthony Towns.

The bench remains largely unchanged, though Mitchell Robinson is out and Andre Drummond is in at the backup center.

Mike Brown remains the head coach as the Knicks are now the hunted instead of the hunter.

Why They Can Repeat

It’s pretty simple for the Knicks on why they can repeat. They’ve done it before.

The playoffs are about many intangible factors that don’t come down to individual talent, namely health and chemistry. The Knicks were healthy last season during the playoffs, but health can never be predicted.

One thing they can rely upon is their chemistry. They took their lumps in the 2025 playoffs, regrouped for 2026, and played with a renewed sense of belief that led them to a championship.

It’s not ideal to be down 20 points in the Finals, but the Knicks know that they are never out of a game. They play together, they trust each other, and they know they can get it done when it matters the most.

They already have the structure and the talent, having this much confidence will carry them a long way.

Why They Can’t Repeat

The East got better with the Sixers adding LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, the Celtics leaning more into three-point shooting with the addition of Paul George, Miami getting Giannis Antetokounmpo, and the Cavaliers adding Peyton Watson to their Eastern Conference Finals roster.

In the West, the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs remain largely unchanged, and could prove to be even better with internal development given how young both squads are.

Health will play a big factor, but on paper the Thunder and Spurs are the two best teams and have the same battle scars that the Knicks acquired, though the Thunder, like the Knicks, have walked away with a championship.
