Tyler Nickel has been making a strong case for a roster spot.

The specific magic of the NBA G-League is the potential that it carries.

The offseason league is a land of of opportunity for all manner of young players looking to earn a shot, or keep a shot, at the next level, and all of that raw energy and nigh-desperation can lead to what seems like a new superstar to appear on the horizon for any team.

Right now, the New York Knicks are witnessing that exact process with Tyler Nickel.

Drafted in the second round by the Phoenix Suns in the 2026 draft then traded to the New York Knicks, Nickel had a steady, if unassuming, college career, mot recently at Vanderbilt, where he shot 44.5% from the field and 40% from three.

What's Impressive About Nickel?

Those shooting skills have so far carried over into Summer League, where he's shown off his skills and mobility on the floor in his brief NBA sample size.

The Knicks could do to have a player with his kind of fluidity and pace on the floor because for as much talent the Knicks have, especially with shooting, they don't have many pure shooters that can bring defenders into a chase the way that Nickel has shown he can.

Donte DiVincenzo filled that role when he was in New York and since he was traded away the Knicks haven't fully replicated his effect, but Nickel could be that answer.

He may still be mostly unproved at this point, but four years of college development have given Nickel time to develop physically and skill-wise that could help speed along his journey to the NBA level, especially if he keeps up what he's shown so far in Las Vegas.

How Can He Help the Knicks?

With Landry Shamet coming back to the Knicks next season, they have at least one pure shooter coming off the bench, but Nickel and Shamet could form an unlikely three point shooting duo, with one playing a spot-up role and another moving through defenses and assuming a catch-and-shoot kind of role.

Shamet would more easily slot into the former while Nickel could be the latter and having the two of them would add versatility to the kind of offensive schemes that head coach Mike Brown could run and make the Knicks that much more impressive offensively.

Nickel will have to keep proving himself to make that idea more plausible and he hasn't been completely unstoppable so far, but if he's able to chain together a few more stellar games, then this Summer League standout could make himself a NBA mainstay for the defending champions.
