Walker Kessler is available as the Lakers visit Sacramento, while the Kings face several absences entering Wednesday’s matchup.
The Los Angeles Lakers head to Sacramento on Wednesday with a chance to extend their winning streak to three games.
L.A. enters at 6-2 following consecutive victories over Toronto and Miami. Sacramento is 1-6 after beating Dallas on Monday for its first win of the season. Tipoff at Golden 1 Center is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT.
The Lakers have most of their rotation available, including Walker Kessler, while the Kings will play without several frontcourt options. For L.A., the matchup offers an opportunity to keep building momentum after completing a sweep of its recent back-to-back.
Lakers Have Kessler Available Against Shorthanded Kings
Adou Thiero remains out because of left knee injury management, according to the NBA’s Wednesday morning injury report.
Having Kessler available gives the Lakers their starting center and a target around the basket for Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves. His presence also allows L.A. to maintain its usual approach defensively, with a rim protector behind its perimeter defenders.
Sacramento has more uncertainty.
Precious Achiuwa is probable with left ankle soreness. Keegan Murray is out with left ankle capsulitis, and Maxime Raynaud is sidelined with a right patella subluxation. Ben Simmons is out following right Achilles tendon repair, while Sean Pedulla is unavailable under a G League two-way designation.
Murray’s absence reduces Sacramento’s options on the wing against an offense that can force defenders to choose between helping on Dončić and staying attached to his teammates.
Raynaud’s absence further limits the Kings’ frontcourt depth. Achiuwa’s probable designation is encouraging for Sacramento, although his final availability remains worth monitoring before tipoff.
The Lakers should have opportunities to attack those limitations. Getting into the paint and making Sacramento defend multiple actions could be more productive than settling for difficult perimeter shots early in possessions.
Lakers Need Their Execution to Travel
L.A. has an advantage in the standings, but its ability to protect the ball and finish defensive possessions will still determine how much control it has on Wednesday.
Dončić and Reaves can create the initial opening. The next decision matters when Sacramento sends help toward either guard. A pass to Kessler near the rim, a cut behind the defense or an extra pass to an open shooter can prevent the Kings from recovering.
The Lakers also need to avoid giving Sacramento additional possessions. Turnovers can create transition opportunities before Kessler and the rest of the defense get organized. Offensive rebounds can erase an otherwise effective defensive sequence.
Sacramento returns home with its first victory secured and an opportunity to build on it against a division opponent. Allowing the Kings to establish confidence early would make the evening more demanding for L.A.
The Lakers must carry their recent execution into a road game. A third straight win would take them to 7-2 and keep their strong opening stretch going without needing another response to a preventable setback.
