Austin Reaves was not happy with how he played for the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Los Angeles Lakers had a historic collapse on Friday in the NBA Cup when they lost by 17 points to the Golden State Warriors.

Losing by 17 is not out of the ordinary for an NBA team, but the Lakers led by 25 points in the contest and by 23 points at the end of the first quarter. The Warriors became the first team in the shot-clock era (since 1954-55) to come back to tie or take the lead at halftime after trailing by 23+ points at the end of the first quarter.

Luka Doncic finished with 37 points, but 21 of those points came in the first quarter.

Austin Reaves had 21 total points, and he took responsibility for his part in the loss after the game.

Reaves’ Turnovers

Reaves finished the game with eight turnovers to only five assists. He had three turnovers in the second quarter when the Warriors started their comeback.

Reaves has struggled with turnovers all season, averaging 4.8 turnovers to only 5.3 assists. His turnover average has gone up in every season of his career as his responsibility has grown. He averaged three turnovers last season, which was top 15 in the league, but it was not all on him, as Luka Doncic led the league in turnovers, and LeBron James, who played for the Lakers last season, was also in the top 15 in turnovers.

Reaves also struggled with turnovers in the playoffs last season, averaging 4.5 turnovers in six games.

With LeBron James out in Philadelphia, Reaves has become the only number two option on the Lakers. For the Lakers to have the kind of success they want to have this season, they need him to take care of the basketball.

Other Issues?

Aside from the turnovers, Reaves has been strong in his role. He’s averaging 23.8 points and shooting 54% from the field, 42% from three, and 88% from the free throw line. His defense has also held up, as the Lakers have a 113.7 defensive rating with him on the floor and a 112.4 rating with him off the floor.

Reaves has proven he can be the number two option throughout his career and has certainly shown that he has the capability of playing that role this season.

He’s giving the Lakers what they paid for on both ends of the floor as the team has started 4-2. Friday was a tough outing, and the turnovers have been a glaring issue, but it’s not going to define the season for Reaves.
