There was a lot of turnover for the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason.
The Los Angeles Lakers had plenty of turnover in the offseason as five rotation players, including five players who started the first five games of the playoffs, have left.
LeBron James remains an unrestricted free agent, Marcus Smart signed with the Houston Rockets, Rui Hachimura signed with the Los Angeles Clippers, Luke Kennard signed with the Phoenix, Jaxson Hayes signed with the Utah Jazz, and Deandre Ayton was traded to the Washington Wizards.
Entering the picture are Walker Kessler, who was traded for first round picks, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Collin Sexton, Quentin Grimes, Jaden Hardy, Kevon Looney, and draft pick Cameron Carr.
Plus, Austin Reaves is returning on a new deal.
Judging The Losses
The Lakers finished fourth in the Western Conference last season, and were on track to finish third before injuries to Luka Doncic and Reaves in April caused them to stumble down the stretch.
They went up 3-0 on the Houston Rockets in the first round with a starting lineup of LeBron, Smart, Hachimura, Kennard, and Ayton, all of whom are now gone.
While the team struggled to find balance and chemistry throughout the first half of the season thanks to various injuries, they were outstanding in March, going 15-2 on the month.
The trio of LeBron, Luka, and Reaves had a +18.4 net rating, finally finding chemistry that had not been present since the Lakers added Luka a year prior.
Smart served as a connector on both ends of the floor, Ayton played more in his role, and Hachimura balanced things out on the offensive end with his shooting and ability to create off the dribble.
Losing five playoff starters and six overall rotation players in one offseason is a lot of turnover that most championship teams don't go through.
Judging The Additions
The Lakers looked to add better fits around Doncic, starting with a center who could protect the rim and be a lob threat. The cost was high, but the Lakers got their guy in Walker Kessler, who is a bruising center who will do much of the dirty work to make life easier for Luka and Reaves.
Mamukelashvili is a stretch four who will also work as a connector, while Grimes is being viewed as the replacement for Smart.
Sexton is a true scoring guard off the bench that the Lakers have not had, Hardy can stretch the floor, and there is a lot to like with Carr given his shooting and defensive capabilities.
In a vacuum, the Lakers made worthy additions to the roster. But completely overhauling a roster is a big risk to take, as chemistry takes time and reps, and aside from Luka and Reaves, this team has had zero time and reps together.
