The Los Angeles Lakers saw their 3-0 start to 2026 come to an end on Wednesday night, with the San Antonio Spurs handing them a 107-91 loss on the road as both LeBron James and Austin Reaves were sidelined for the purple and gold. While injuries haven't been the whole story, they've played a part in the Lakers' season early on.
Among those players who have been injured is Gabe Vincent, as the 29-year-old guard has played in just 15 games this season for the Lakers in his third year with the team. It's been a rough season so far for him numbers-wise, but he spoke with reporters after the loss to talk about his injury battles this year.
"It felt good to get out there and get some run. Did what I could in workouts, trying to play against the managers, some of the players when I could, to prep myself for the game. Felt good to get back out there and compete, play with the guys, went through my minutes, handled them well. Body feels god so far, so I'll take it," Vincent said.
Wednesday marked the first time Vincent had played since December 14th, when he played just under 19 minutes and scored 10 points in a win over the Phoenix Suns. With two lengthy injury stretches this season, it's hard to know if Vincent will be able to stay on the floor, but the veteran guard seems confident.
"I'm confident I'll be back. Obviously, we'll see how the body feels after the flight. I think it'll do well," he added.
Vincent is currently in the final year of his three-year, $33 million contract, making $11.5 million this season. The constant battles with injuries, as well as the struggles offensively, could lead to the Lakers exploring potential trade options to move his expiring salary before the February 5th trade deadline.
Vincent joined the Lakers back in 2023 when he signed that three-year deal, coming off a strong postseason run with the Miami Heat in the 2023 postseason, where he averaged 15.8 points on 51.6% three-point shooting against the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals.
Unfortunately, Vincent hasn't been able to live up to his price tag in LA, and with three ball-dominant players now in LeBron James, Luka Doncic, and Austin Reaves, Vincent doesn't bring much value if he can't hit shots consistently, even if he's bringing effort on the defensive end.
