LeBron James has yet to decide what's next in his career, and it might be some time till we find out.

The Los Angeles Lakers are entering one of the most important offseasons in franchise history, and one of the biggest questions: will LeBron James return for a 24th NBA season?

According to Dan Woike of The Athletic, the uncertainty surrounding James' future could mean that a decision does not come anytime soon, as both the four-time NBA champion and the Lakers continue to evaluate their options.

James is coming off another impressive campaign where he turned 41 midway through the season.

Production in Year 23

In his 23rd season, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists while earning his 22nd straight All-Star selection and proving he can still perform at an elite level.

James' situation is more complicated than simply agreeing to another contract with the Lakers, per Woike.

The Lakers have publicly emphasized building around Luka Dončić and they will try to put together a roster best suited for the Slovenian.

The Lakers could prioritize using available cap space or pursuing trades before finalizing James' future.

Decisions to Make Surrounding the Roster

The franchise also has several important players to consider beyond James, including Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, Marcus Smart and Luke Kennard, while trying to add pieces that better complement Dončić.

According to Woike, the Lakers have long viewed James' contract as an expiring deal and have shown interest in maintaining flexibility this summer.

If the team operates under the salary cap, James' nearly $60 million cap hold becomes a significant factor in constructing the roster.

At the same time, the Lakers could pivot if trade opportunities emerge before free agency officially begins.

Should they acquire players through trades that involve matching salaries, they may instead operate as an over-the-cap team, allowing them to use James' Bird rights to potentially negotiate a larger contract.

For now, though, there does not appear to be a clear path.

Lakers president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka has previously indicated that the organization wants to give James the time and space necessary to decide his future.

Woike also reported that James' agent, Rich Paul, recently said he has not even had discussions with the superstar about next season.

That lack of urgency suggests a resolution may not come quickly.

Woike also pointed out that despite James' continued production, there may not be many teams capable of offering him a salary that reflects his value under the current salary cap landscape.

Even if he continues to play, he could end up earning significantly less than the $52.6 million he earned last season.

As the Lakers work through potential trades and free-agent scenarios, James' own timeline may depend on the opportunities the organization creates to improve the roster around Dončić.

Until those plans become clearer, one of the NBA's biggest offseason decisions could remain on hold, leaving fans waiting to see whether James returns for another season in L.A. or chooses a different path.
