The Los Angeles Lakers held on for a 125-122 victory against the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night.

The Lakers went up 118-115 with just over two minutes remaining after Luka Doncic split a pair of free throws. The two squads traded missed field goals before Bennedict Mathurin was called for a charge on Austin Reaves. The call was the sixth foul on Mathurin, taking him out of the game.

Clippers head coach Ty Lue challenged the call, but it stood, giving the Lakers possession.

On the ensuing possession, Luka would get to the paint, hit a jumper, and draw a foul on Kris Dunn. Luka knocked down the free throw, putting the Lakers up 121-115 with 90 seconds remaining.

JJ Redick On The Charge

Speaking to the media after the game, Lakers head coach JJ Redick called the charge the "Play of the Game."

“Yeah, I thought the charge was the play of the game. Frankly, the second charge would've been the play of the game had made the right call, which they didn't. And you know, they (Clippers) make a three, but you know, that was a huge play given the circumstances," said Redick.

Redick is referring to the following play after Doncic finished the and-one, where Jordan Miller drove into the paint and crashed into Reaves, who was looking to draw a charge. Miller threw the ball to Derrick Jones Jr in the corner, who knocked down a three to cut the lead to 121-118.

Redick praised Doncic for being "fantastic" in the game, saying he was super-efficient.

Redick Praises Deandre Ayton And Marcus Smart

While the Lakers got their usual production out of Doncic, Reaves, and LeBron James, Redick offered praise for Marcus Smart and Deandre Ayton.

He said that Ayton was a difference maker in the fourth quarter and that Smart was fantastic on defense all night.

Smart was also a difference maker on the offensive end in the fourth, scoring seven points in the quarter.

After Jones Jr knocked down the three to cut the lead to three, Smart hit a 15-footer to push the lead back to five with a minute remaining.

All seven of Smart's points came in the final frame. On top of his play on the court, Redick said that Smart provided great leadership in the huddles.

Ayton finished with 13 points and seven rebounds. Redick was more impressed with Ayton's play on the other end of the floor, saying that he executed the defensive game plan at a high level.
