JJ Redick is excited about the addition of Walker Kessler.

Of all the additions the Los Angeles Lakers made in the offseason, none are bigger than Walker Kessler.

Both in physical stature, in what he means to the new-look Lakers, and in how much the team gave up to acquire him.

Kessler, a restricted free agent with the Utah Jazz, was acquired for unprotected first-round draft picks in 2031 and 2033, plus first-round pick swaps in 2028 and 2030. The Lakers then signed Kessler to a four-year, $130 million deal.

Since acquiring Luka Doncic in 2025, the Lakers have been searching for the perfect center to pair him with. Deandre Ayton didn’t work out last offseason, but fans and head coach JJ Redick are optimistic that Kessler will be the solution.

JJ Redick Speaks

Speaking at media day on Thursday, Redick was asked what he likes about Kessler and how he envisions him fitting in.

Redick called Kessler “a perfect fit” next to Doncic and Austin Reaves, highlighting his rim protection and being an anchor on defense.

“We have switched a lot over the years. That has been by necessity. We want him protecting the rim.”

He also praised Kessler for his offensive ability, noting that he finishes lobs well and that the Lakers like throwing lobs, noting they led the league in lob dunks last season.

“He’s just the perfect fit for those guys and for building out the next phase of the Lakers,” said Redick.

Kessler missed the majority of last season, limited to just five games before undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery.

He averaged 14.4 points, 10.8 rebounds, and three assists in those five games with the Jazz.

Is Redick Correct?

The Lakers needed a center who could protect the rim, set screens, and finish around the basket.

They found that person in Kessler. He does all the dirty work that will make life easier for Doncic and Reaves, who will have the ball in their hands the majority of the time.

Doncic thrived with Daniel Gafford and Derrick Lively when Dallas made their run to the NBA Finals in 2024. Kessler projects have a similar impact given his skill set, and could be even more effective, as he has touch away from the rim and a better feel for the game than Gafford and Lively in 2024.

Redick clearly has an idea of how he wants to utilize Kessler, and he has an adaptable star in Doncic, who will get him involved and play to his strengths.
