The Lakers are being projected as Jonathan Kuminga’s eventual destination, but his desired salary remains the biggest obstacle.

The Los Angeles Lakers have remained connected to Jonathan Kuminga throughout free agency, and one NBA insider believes their persistence will eventually lead to a deal.

ClutchPoints insider Brett Siegel said on “Clutch Scoops” that the Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers are the two teams showing interest in Kuminga. Despite Cleveland’s involvement, Siegel predicted that the 23-year-old forward will ultimately land with L.A.

“There’s two teams right now. It’s the Cavs and the Lakers,” Siegel said. “I personally believe he will end up with the Lakers.”

No deal is imminent, however, because Kuminga and the interested teams have yet to find common ground financially.

Kuminga willing to wait for his price

According to Siegel, Kuminga is seeking a contract worth approximately $14 million to $16 million annually and is prepared to let the process continue until he receives an acceptable offer.

“He’s willing to hold out as long as possible,” Siegel said. “He wants somewhere in that sweet spot of $14 million to $16 million.”

Kuminga became an unrestricted free agent after the Atlanta Hawks declined his $24.3 million team option for the 2026-27 season. Atlanta acquired him and Buddy Hield from the Golden State Warriors for Kristaps Porziņģis at the trade deadline.

Kuminga averaged 12.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists last season while splitting time between Golden State and Atlanta, according to NBA.com. He scored 27 points in his Hawks debut but primarily operated as a reserve during the final stretch of the season.

The No. 7 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft remains an intriguing option because of his age, athleticism and ability to attack the basket. The question is whether a team values that upside enough to meet his asking price.

Why the Lakers remain interested

The Lakers have reshaped their roster around Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves following LeBron James’ departure. L.A. added Quentin Grimes, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Walker Kessler, Collin Sexton and several other veterans, but it could still use another athletic forward.

Kuminga would give the Lakers a downhill scorer capable of finishing in transition and playing above the rim. Dončić’s passing could create easier scoring opportunities for him as a cutter and roll man.

Adding him would require another roster decision. The Lakers currently have 16 players on guaranteed contracts and must trim that number to 15 before opening night. A sign-and-trade could allow L.A. to address its roster crunch while creating a larger salary for Kuminga.

Kuminga could accept the Lakers’ reported two-year, $20 million proposal or receive more money through a sign-and-trade. Either route would require compromise from at least one side.

Cleveland remains a team to monitor, but Siegel’s prediction reflects the Lakers’ continued pursuit. If Kuminga lowers his demands or L.A. creates additional financial flexibility, the prolonged courtship could finally produce a deal.
