Could Klay Thompson be headed to Los Angeles?

The Los Angeles Lakers have been one of the busiest teams in the offseason as five rotation players have moved on, but the Lakers worked diligently to replace them with players that they perceive to be better fits around Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.

The team might not be done adding players as they remain an attractive destination for free agents and veterans who are still looking for a team or might be looking for a new team in the near future.

Klay Thompson is currently under contract with the Dallas Mavericks, but his name has been present during the offseason in trade rumors or possible buyout negotiations, which would allow Klay to become a free agent.

Klay to the Lakers?

A report from Christian Clark of the Athletic stated the Mavericks have explored the trade market for Thompson, and that he would welcome a deal to Los Angeles as he grew up in the city.

Klay's father, former NBA player Mychal Thompson, was tagged on social media with the response, "Get back on it!" as a fan urged Mychal to help get his son to Los Angeles.

Mychal replied, "I'm TRYING" with an angry face emoji.

Mychal spent five years with the Lakers, winning championships in 1987 and 1988 with the team.

The Lakers have reportedly been looking to trade Jarred Vanderbilt this offseason. He's making $12 million this upcoming season and has a player option for next season. Klay is in the last year of his deal and will make $17 million this season.

A one-for-one deal would work when it comes to money, though the Mavericks would likely request a second-round pick as part of the trade.

A Good Move For LA?

When Klay left Golden State in the 2024 offseason, he signed with the Mavericks because they were just coming off a Finals, and it gave him the opportunity to play next to Luka Doncic, one of the best playmakers in the game.

Luka was traded to the Lakers four months into the season, ending the Luka and Klay partnership. In 2024, they played 480 minutes together, posting a +9.1 net rating.

This trade would reunite the two and allow Klay to finish out his contract next to the guy he originally signed to join.

Thomson might be a step slower defensively due to age and injuries, but he shot 38% from three on 7.6 attempts last season on a poor Mavericks team.

The addition of Klay would give the Lakers even more depth, an area they've improved this offseason, and a championship-level veteran in the locker room.
