The Los Angeles Lakers suffered a frustrating loss against the Boston Celtics on Sunday to put the brakes on a budding winning streak, but they're looking to shake off that loss and finish an eight-game home stand strong with a matchup against the Orlando Magic on Tuesday, and they'll be missing just one role player in the process.
Jaxson Hayes will be OUT for Tuesday's game due to a right ankle sprain. He played just five minutes against the Celtics and while initial testing revealed a more minor ankle injury and Hayes was designated day-to-day, his upgrade to full out status and the revelation of a sprain leaves Hayes without a clear timeline to return to the court.
That's bad news for the Lakers when it comes to their depth concerns, particularly at Hayes' position
Hayes backs up Deandre Ayton at center for Los Angeles, but with Ayton's inconsistencies, Hayes has been a crucial piece for the Lakers to rely on. He played a season-high 34 minutes in the Lakers' win over the Dallas Mavericks on Feb. 12 in a show of faith from the Lakers in his abilities
Behind Hayes on the depth chart are both Maxi Kleber and Drew Timme. Kleber is a reliable veteran presence for the Lakers who can provide effective minutes and Timme has shown promise, but is mostly unproven.
Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James (23) is guarded by Orlando Magic guard Anthony Black (0) in the fourth quarter at Kia Center. Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn ImagesOf course, Ayton is still the starting center and he's shown he's capable of big games himself, so there's no reason to sound the alarm bells quite yet.
Beyond Hayes' injury, the Lakers are healthy. Bronny James and Adou Thiero are listed as OUT, but they're both an assignment with the South Bay Lakers in the G-League, not injured.
Orlando Magic forward Franz Wagner (22) controls the ball from Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James (23) in the fourth quarter at Kia Center. Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn ImagesOrlando is coming into Tuesday's game slightly more short-handed than Los Angeles.
Jalen Suggs is QUESTIONABLE to play against the lakers due to a back strain. Suggs has missed the last two games with the back injury, depriving the Magic of one of their reliable scorer and playmaker, who leads the team in assists with an average of 5.4 per game and leads the team in steals with 1.9 per game.
Orlando Magic forward Franz Wagner (22) reacts after a play against the Los Angeles Lakers in the fourth quarter at Kia Center. Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn ImagesFranz Wagner remains OUT with a high ankle sprain in his right ankle. ESPN's Shams Charania reported earlier in the week that Wagner will be out indefinitely due to the injury, putting the Magic in a tight spot without their second-highest scoring player.
Wagner is less then a point behind Paolo Banchero for the team lead with an average of 21.3 points per game.
Beyond Orlando's two injured stars, Colin Castleton and Alex Morales are both OUT for Tuesday's game on two-way contracts in the G-League.
