The Lakers continue to pursue Jonathan Kuminga, signaling they aren't ready to give up on adding another impact forward this offseason.
The Los Angeles Lakers remain active in their pursuit of free agent forward Jonathan Kuminga, even as the market for the former Golden State Warriors lottery pick continues to develop.
According to ESPN's Anthony Slater, the Lakers "keep calling Jonathan Kuminga," an indication that L.A. has not backed away from its interest despite facing competition and financial limitations.
The 23-year-old spent the second half of last season with the Atlanta Hawks after beginning his career with the Warriors, and he remains one of the youngest and most intriguing forwards available.
For a Lakers team looking to build around Luka Dončić following the departure of LeBron James to the Sixers, Kuminga's athleticism, defensive versatility and upside could make him an ideal long-term addition.
Why Kuminga Fits the Lakers
Kuminga has shown flashes of becoming a productive two-way forward since entering the NBA as the No. 7 overall pick in the 2021 draft. While his role has changed throughout his career, his physical tools and ability to attack the basket have remained consistent.
Last season, Kuminga averaged 12.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 36 games split between Golden State and Atlanta. He shot 46.3% from the field while continuing to improve as a rebounder and secondary playmaker.
Over five NBA seasons, Kuminga has averaged 12.5 points and 4.2 rebounds while shooting 50.2% from the field. His best campaign came during the 2023-24 season when he averaged 16.1 points and 4.8 rebounds, showing the offensive growth that made him one of the league's most promising young forwards.
For L.A., Kuminga would bring another athletic wing capable of defending multiple positions while providing scoring in transition and around the rim. At just 23 years old, he would also fit the timeline of a roster that has shifted toward younger talent.
Obstacles Still Remain
Although the Lakers continue to express interest, completing a deal may not be easy with reports of Atlanta not wanting to take on some of the pieces L.A. has to give.
L.A. has already been one of the busiest teams this offseason, adding Walker Kessler, Quentin Grimes, Matisse Thybulle, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Collin Sexton and Kevon Looney.
The current roster is nearing capacity, meaning any move for Kuminga could require additional roster or salary adjustments.

Kuminga is expected to command a significant contract despite an inconsistent 2025-26 season, and several teams have monitored his situation throughout free agency.
Still, the Lakers' continued communication suggests they believe Kuminga could fill an important role alongside Dončić, Austin Reaves and Kessler. His ability to guard multiple positions and create offense without needing the ball in his hands makes him an attractive fit for head coach JJ Redick's system.
Whether the Lakers ultimately land Kuminga remains uncertain, but their persistence shows the front office is still searching for another difference-maker. If a deal can be reached, L.A. could add one of the offseason's most talented remaining free agents while continuing to reshape its roster for both the present and the future.
