The Los Angeles Lakers will get a big boost to their starting lineup as they welcome back one of their All-Stars.
The Lakers announced that Luka Doncic is available to play in Friday's game against the Memphis Grizzlies. Doncic has missed the last three games with a left finger sprain and a lower left leg contusion.
Doncic played in the first two games of the season for the Lakers, averaging 46 points, 11 rebounds, and 8 assists. The Lakers went 1-1 in those two games, losing on opening night to the Golden State Warriors before bouncing back against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Doncic is shooting 62% from the field, 31% from three on 11 attempts, and 79% from the line on 14 attempts per game.
The Lakers went 2-1 in the three games without Doncic as Austin Reaves led the charge for the Purple and Gold. Reaves averaged 40 points, five rebounds, and ten assists in the three games. He hit the game-winning shot against the Timberwolves on Wednesday to push the Lakers' overall record to 3-2.
Doncic will resume his role in the starting lineup with Jake LaRavia or Jarred Vanderbilt being moved back to the bench.
Along with Doncic returning to the lineup, the Lakers will also welcome back Marcus Smart. Smart has missed the last two games with a quad injury. Smart is averaging seven points, two assists, and one steal in his three games played this season.
Los Angeles has been without LeBron James for all five games this season. He is sidelined until mid-November with sciatica.
The Lakers went 3-1 against the Grizzlies last season. Their last meeting came on March 29, a 134-127 victory for Los Angeles. Reaves led all scorers with 31. Doncic had 29 and LeBron James chipped in with 25 points.
Friday's game between the Lakers and Grizzlies will be the first game for each team in the NBA Cup. The early season tournament will take place in the coming weeks with the finals to be held in mid-December.
The Lakers will face the Los Angeles Clippers, Grizzlies, Dallas Mavericks, and New Orleans Pelicans during group play in the tournament. LA won the inaugural NBA Cup in 2023.
After facing the Grizzlies in Memphis on Friday, the Lakers will return home for one game against the Miami Heat on Sunday. They'll head back out on the road the following night for a game in Portland against the Trail Blazers.
