Cameron Carr has had a hot start to the Summer League, but defense is his emphasis for the Lakers.
Los Angeles Lakers rookie Cameron Carr has quickly shown why the franchise traded up in the 2026 NBA Draft to acquire him, but the first-round pick knows there is one area that will determine how quickly he can earn a role at the NBA level: his defense.
Carr was originally selected No. 24 overall by the New York Knicks before his draft rights were traded to L.A.
The Lakers moved up from No. 25 to No. 24 in a multi-team draft-night deal to secure the Baylor guard.
Through his first Summer League action, Carr has already provided glimpses of the offensive upside that made him a first-round pick.
His Hot Start in the Summer League
The 6-foot-5 guard has been one of the Lakers' most productive players during the California Classic in the Bay, showcasing his ability to score from multiple levels while displaying the athleticism and versatility that made him an appealing prospect.
Carr opened Summer League with 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting, including five made 3-pointers, against the Golden State Warriors. He followed that performance with his best outing yet, recording 26 points, eight rebounds and four made 3-pointers in a double-overtime victory over the Miami Heat.
In the Lakers' double OT win over Miami, Carr showed the scoring ability that could eventually translate into an NBA role alongside Luka Dončić. However, after the game, the rookie pointed to defense as the area where he must continue improving.
“Got to step up and be more consistent,” Carr said. “Be ahead of it, on time and be in the right spots so I’m not messing up for these guys. Nobody wants to go out there and guard their butt off for 20 seconds, and the dude that messes up is the dude that just got here.”
The Excitement Surrounding Carr
Carr's comments showed the level of accountability the Lakers want from their young players. While his offensive production has generated excitement, he understands that earning consistent NBA minutes requires trust from his teammates and coaches on both ends of the floor.
The defensive adjustment is one many young players face when entering the NBA. The speed, spacing and complexity of professional offenses require players to communicate, anticipate actions and consistently be in the correct position.
His Summer League performances have only increased excitement surrounding his development. Carr has shown the ability to create shots, knock down perimeter attempts and impact the game in multiple areas.
Now, the next challenge is proving he can bring that same impact defensively.
With the Lakers continuing to build around Luka Dončić, young players who can contribute immediately will have opportunities. Carr's scoring ability gives him a foundation, but becoming a dependable defender could determine how quickly he becomes part of Los Angeles' rotation.
After an encouraging start to Summer League, Carr has already shown why the Lakers targeted him. Now he knows the next step is becoming the complete player needed to stay on the floor.
