LeBron James' departure to Philadelphia may have surprised many, but reports indicate the Lakers had already decided it was time to turn the page.

LeBron James' decision to leave the Los Angeles Lakers for the Philadelphia 76ers marked the end of an eight-year stint with the franchise.

While the move caught many around the NBA by surprise, recent reporting suggests the Lakers had already begun preparing for life without their longtime superstar.

According to ESPN, multiple sources close to James and within the 76ers believed the Lakers were never serious about re-signing the 22-time All-Star despite president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka publicly stating after the season that the organization hoped to keep him.

The report said people close to James believed the franchise was prepared to move on after the Oklahoma City Thunder swept L.A. in the Western Conference semifinals.

James ultimately agreed to a two-year deal with Philadelphia that includes a player option, giving both sides the fresh start they appeared to be seeking.

A Franchise Ready for Change

The Lakers' offseason has reflected an organization focused on building around Luka Dončić rather than extending James' championship window.

After acquiring Dončić to become the centerpiece of the franchise, the front office spent the summer reshaping the roster with younger talent.

Walker Kessler was brought in to strengthen the interior, while Quentin Grimes, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Kevon Looney, Collin Sexton, Ziaire Williams, Jaden Hardy and Matisse Thybulle were added to improve the team's athleticism, depth and versatility.

Those moves signaled a shift toward constructing a roster that complements Dončić's style of play while also giving the organization greater flexibility moving forward.

Although Pelinka's public comments suggested the Lakers wanted James to return, ESPN reported that those close to the situation viewed that possibility differently behind the scenes.

According to the report, James' camp believed the organization had already committed to a new direction before free agency officially began.

Philadelphia emerged as an unexpected destination, but sources cited by ESPN described it as a bold basketball decision rather than a fallback option.

James Leaves an Unmatched Legacy in L.A.

Even at 41 years old during the 2025-26 season, James continued to perform at an elite level.

He averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds across 60 games while shooting 51.5% from the field. His production remained remarkably consistent throughout his eight seasons with the Lakers, where he averaged at least 20 points every year while helping deliver the franchise's 17th NBA championship in 2020.

His impact stretched well beyond the numbers. James helped return the Lakers to championship contention, mentored younger teammates and remained one of the league's biggest attractions throughout his tenure.

Still, every franchise eventually reaches a crossroads.

For the Lakers, that turning point arrived this offseason. Rather than continuing to build around one of the greatest players in NBA history, the organization chose to embrace Dončić as its new franchise cornerstone fully.

James now begins year 24 of his career in Philadelphia with another opportunity to compete for a championship, while the Lakers move into a new era with a younger core and a roster built for the future.

Whether the separation benefits both sides will be determined over the coming seasons, but the reporting following James' departure suggests the outcome had been decided well before free agency officially opened.
