The Los Angeles Lakers fell to the Orlando Magic on Tuesday night, 110-109.
The Lakers had a chance to win it at the buzzer as the ball was inbounded to Luka Doncic with six seconds left.
Luka seemed to have a good look from about 30 feet out, but hesitated. He took a step forward and looked for a shot, but was ultimately trapped by the Magic players. Luka passed it off to LeBron James, who was covered and had his back to the basket when he received the ball.
LeBron hoisted a turning three that hit the backboard and back rim.
After the game, LeBron was asked what happened on the final possession.
"I thought we got a good opportunity. Luka came off clean, and I think he felt off balance. We executed. We didn't get the shot that we wanted. We did execute," he said.
LeBron inbounded the ball on the Lakers' side of the court with everyone on the opposite side of the halfcourt line. The team sprinted into the front court to get set up as the whistle blew, and they were able to get Luka free thanks to a screen by Deandre Ayton that occupied two Magic defenders.
The hesitation on the catch by Luka allowed Anthony Black and Paolo Banchero to get back into position to defend a potential shot.
Giving further comments, LeBron said, "We executed. I'm not sure. Obviously, you'd have to ask Luka what he saw. I thought he had a good look and it looked like he kind of lost his balance, didn't have a rhythm with the ball, whatever the case may be and it allowed them to get back in front of him. I was kind of off balance when he gave it to me. I thought he had a great look, that's my POV."
The Lakers have been one of the better teams in the clutch all season, sporting a 16-4 record in such situations.
They have a 130 offensive rating in the clutch, which is tops in the league, and a 110.7 defensive rating.
The Lakers blew multiple double-digit leads during the game, but were ultimately in a position to win as they took a 106-103 lead with just over two minutes remaining.
LeBron had a chance to maintain a three-point lead with 44 seconds left, but split a pair of free throws, and Orlando took the lead on the ensuing possession with a Desmond Bane three.
LeBron got the points back on a dunk off a Luka assist. Banchero missed with ten seconds remaining, but Anthony Black got the rebound. He lost possession on the way up, but the ball went into the hands of Wendell Carter Jr underneath the basket, and he finished off the play with a layup, which turned out to be the game-winning shot.
