LeBron James speaks on his potential retirement.
LeBron James wrapped up his 23rd NBA season after losing in the second round of the NBA playoffs to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
An unrestricted free agent in the offseason, the question surrounding LeBron isn't which team he will play for, it is whether or not he will return for a 24th season.
LeBron will turn 42 in December, but this past season showed that he can still play at a high level and contribute to a winning team. In 60 games, LeBron averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists.
In the playoffs, LeBron led the Lakers past the Houston Rockets in the first round before being swept by the Thunder. He averaged 23.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 7.3 assists.
What Will LeBron Do?
On Tuesday, LeBron was named as one of the 100 most influential people in sports by TIME Magazine.
Speaking to the outlet about his future, he said, "It’s up to the mind…Where the mind goes, the body will lay. When I’m not in love with getting to the arenas on game days five hours before to start my preparation, if I’m out of love with getting to practice 2½ hours beforehand, then I know I’ll be done.”
LeBron did not have a training camp last season as he dealt with sciatic going into the season. He ended up missing the first 14 games for the Lakers.
Asked about next season, LeBron said, “I love being out there and competing at the highest level, which the postseason is…Playing the game that I love and having fun, enjoying the competition, was something that you always live for, no matter where you are in your career…I’ve spent a lot of time sacrificing…I spent a lot of time putting in the work of my own individual craft, and I’ve had to give up a lot of family time. So a big part of the next 10 years won’t be me getting it back, because you can’t get time back. But my daughter is 11 years old. I’m going to pour into her. I’m going to pour into my wife. Because I wanted to be the greatest that ever played this game, I’ve had to not be the complete husband and complete dad that I want to be.”
Still Competing
LeBron noticeably took a backseat to Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves in the second half of last season, which led to the Lakers having a March where they went 15-2, including victories over the New York Knicks, Denver Nuggets, Houston Rockets, and Cleveland Cavaliers.
Injuries to Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves in early April put water on the Lakers' championship hopes, but LeBron proved he can still be a key piece on a championship team.
Ultimately, LeBron's decision will come down to what he wants and what he feels is best for him and his family. He has nothing left to prove, already cementing himself as one of the greatest players of all-time, holding multiple records, and leaving behind a legacy that is unlikely to be matched.
