Los Angeles Lakers free agent LeBron James is patiently waiting to decide his future.
The Los Angeles Lakers have a huge 2026 offseason ahead of them after getting swept in the second round of the playoffs, with the future of LeBron James hanging in the balance.
The future Hall of Fame forward is set to hit unrestricted free agency, and since he is expected to play at least one more season, all eyes are on where he ends up. While a return to Los Angeles is undoubtedly on the table, and seemingly the most likely option, James has yet to make up his mind. In fact, it might be a while until we actually know where James will be playing next season.
During a recent episode of the Mind the Game podcast, James admitted that he is not ready to make a decision yet.
"I'm still in the moment of like, just taking my time. I haven't even really thought about it too much," James said. "Obviously, I understand that I'm a free agent, and I can control my own destiny, if it's being here with this franchise for the foreseeable future or going somewhere else, I haven't really even got to that point."
LeBron James is taking his time
This is one of the biggest decisions James has faced in years, frankly, since he decided to sign with the Lakers in the 2018 offseason. With the idea of retirement also a talking point, there are plenty of routes James could take this summer.
After such a successful career, James could legitimately do whatever he wanted this offseason, although it would be hard to envision him leaving his family in Los Angeles.
Still, he claims he has no idea what is in store. James admits that he could wait until August to make a decision, and he likely will not even start thinking about his future until late June.
"I think at some point, up in late June, as July rolls around and free agency starts to get going, and July rolling, maybe into August, we start to kinda get a feel of what my future may look like," James said.
Retirement is on the table
Even though James has enough gas left in the tank to play another year or two, he talked about the possibility of retirement when discussing his uncertain future.
"If it's continuing to play the game that I love, which I know I can still give so much to the game and play at a high level, or if it's not. But I have not got to that point yet," he said.
He also mentioned how his family will impact his decision, and while they likely will not stop him from playing altogether, they could help him decide where he ends up. Leaving Los Angeles would be shocking, as he wants to be comfortable and with his family, but we will likely not know for sure until July.
James has already done his job by bringing a championship to every franchise he has played for, so at this point in his career, it is truly about taking care of himself.
